So getting oil change and brake service done at dealer today.
Only need front pads and rotors milled. But I was asked a question from the service rep that I thought was odd and have never been asked this by any rep before.
He wanted to know if I wanted the old worn brake pads.
After I laughed I realized he was serious. I told him to go ahead and recycle them.
Perhaps he merely wanted to know if you wanted to inspect those parts pulled from your vehicle. Should be more routine, IMO, to show a customer those parts so the customer can see work was actually performed and was actually needed. I know this was more the norm in my youth when the shops were family owned businesses and you knew the owner.
When I first got my RX300 years ago I had all four rotors replaced and new pads all around. This was at a local independent. Soon after I heard soft thumps coming from the back so I checked it out and there were all four used rotors and two boxes of used pads sliding around back there. That was a heavy mess just to get rid of!
You should ALWAYS ASK FOR THE OLD BRAKES!!! ALWAYS!!!!
Why???? Because so many idiot mechanics do not realize that on certain toyota models and Lexus especially, THE SHIMS AND SQUEEKERS on the old pads are extremely important to the noise level of new pads. Have them transfer the old shims and SQUEEKERS to the new pad EVERY TIME!

SQUEEKERS... you people in Texas talk all funny and such.
My daddy always taught me to call them wear indicators. But, he was a Yankee.
