Default P0420 code + horrible sound from engine

Long story short I inherited a 2000 RX300 with 167K miles. Drove the car back and forth from Las Vegas to Cedar City, Utah twice in the past couple weeks with no issues. Yesterday while driving around town the check engine light came on followed by a horrible sound from the engine (video included). I dont have any info regarding maintenance for this vehicle, only that it drove perfectly fine for 500+ miles and then this sudden acute issue.

Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance

Video of intermittent knocking sound that appears to be coming from the 6th cylinder perhaps originating from the head?

1. Oil level? How fresh is oil?
2. timing. Was belt ever done? It awfully sounded like bad rocker lash. As it has VVT-I, it might as well be result of something going on there. Don't forget, there are 2 VVT-I oil filters that at that mileage might as well be clogged, causing VVT-I failure.
So start with basic - maintenance check.

Sounds like an oil pressure issue. Clean the ocv filters. Pull off the valve cover and see whats loose in there

once the rpm increased it quieted down as if it was lubricated. Good chance the damage has been done by now if it wasnt getting oil

Yeah it seems the system got starved. It makes sense now with the two replies, unfortunately the car now has rod knock, the damage has been done

thank you you for the replies! Happy to know what the culprit was!

car had a fresh oil change upon leaving Vegas for Cedar city. I pulled the spark plugs and they were in terrible condition, huge build up of ash! The motor was not maintained well at all.

Wow, that's really bad luck. What do you intend to do?

Looking at that spark plug it seems like you had a major oil burner, likely due to the clogged baffles/ports in the rear valve cover, and the oil level went real low causing other damage. If it was just a clogged oil control valve filter, I don't see why you would have the deposit build up on the plug.

With spark plugs, you might also here a helicopter like noise when accelerating from a dead stop. That generally means they are getting old, out of gap.

Does the second video sound like rod knock to you? Or more of a timing issue?

Oil burner... But you see, oil burn like this is reason number one coming from bad plug tube seals and number 2 - head gasket. You'd have had plug insulator covered in oil if #1.
