Default Quick question on tow pkg.

Did all 2002 RX300s come equipped with a tow prep package (oil and trans cooler)? I know the receiver (hitch) was an extra cost item. I searched the internet and this site and found someone who said all 2001s had the tow prep package. Wanted to be certain the '02s came that way as well. Thanks.

Try the vin number search or even contact Lexus for configuration of your vehicle. You can visually trace some items.

During early production years the toe harness was missing and later it was added.

Thanks but I don't have a specific vehicle in mind.

Hopefully some one will post more apt information. If you want to remain in generic discussion, please look for AWD model and FWD may not be appropriate for towing. I had FWD and did couple of tows [hauling stone + tiles].

If you are open to accepting unsolicited advice, I would pass on first gen RX as a towing vehicle.

Thank you for your input. All advice is appreciated. If I go with a first gen, I will only consider AWD. We have a teardrop trailer (basically a bed on wheels), gross weight is 1500 lbs, not much tongue weight. We had a CRV which would pull it but it needed more power (4 cyl. 160hp). The 3.0 has 220 hp, should be enough to handle the weight. I would rather have an RX with a factory equipped tow prep package, hence my question. Most sellers don't if their car is so equipped or not.

First gen weakest link is the transmission. How true or how much of it is a hoopla who knows. I had no issue but that by itself is only one data point. Based on all the chatter, we have to accept that the transmission is the weakest link. So it might be prudent to look at an alternative, specially when you have yet to acquire one. I would steer you to 4runner or GX.

"Towing prep package" was a factory option, not standard. As you say, the actual hitch didn't come with it - it was a port/dealer-installed option.

I have a 2002 RX300 that I purchased new and the Tow package was standard equipment. If you want to see what a vehicle is equipped with go to Lexus.com and open an account, then you can put in the vin number and and you can see the original specs.
