Default New transmission - would you do it?

So my 2001 RX AWD which has been a fantastic ride needs a new transmission (and another thing or two) with an estimated cost of about $6000. Currently somewhere near 220,000 miles on it.

Is it worth it?

Without fixing it, any idea what its worth if sold as is or for parts? It seems like a lot to put back into it at this point given the age and milage but I'm on the fence.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Pricing is so local. Most money can be gotten by parting it out. but you have to handle sales, shipping, and carcass is varying shape. Your neighbors may have an input.

Also price out what will be the potential sale value after you do the repairs.
Another factor is when do you think you will part with the RX [years of potential service].

On the positive side the vehicle has given you good service and life. Eventually you will have to part with it.

Yes, it's not an easy choice. The service life after making repairs is such an unknown for me given the age and milage. If it were to be repaired, any thoughts as to a ball park range of what the car could be sold for?

Thanks.

If your mechanically inclined you could r&r the transmission. Call LKQ and see what the cost is. A lot of shops today install cutouts, meaning they buy from lkq and r&r it and mark it up.

I see we're both in GA; if you decide to part out, please let me know! I could use some bits and bobs. I struggle to advise on the transmission element; mine went on me last year but all it took to get her back to perfect was a filter service. Without knowing how deep into diagnostics you/your mechanic went or what symptoms it's exhibiting, it's hard to say much. Though if you're at the point of no return, it can't hurt to throw a filter and fresh fluid at it and see what happens.

"Is it worth it?" Not at that price.
"Worth if sold for parts?" Next to nothing.

I'd see what the lowest price you can get the transmission rebuilt/replaced and then sell it/trade it immediately. You should be able to get the transmission fixed for under $1500 and get $2500-$3500 for the car, depending on condition.

Default I did it

Mine died at 227.000 miles
total rebuilding cost was less than 2.000 USD, but I’m in Spain…
worth the money
is a fantastic car, so far the only problem made it to me.
in my BMW I already spent more money in repairs
if the RX had a better MPG (now I do around 19-20 HWY) will be perfect
is the only SUV that does off road (not like a Jeep, but not like the moderns SUV)

Did you ask for upgraded planetary gear set?
Another q: Did the shop determine the root cause of the breakdown?

Caused for the normal use, nothing special. just started to slip the gearbox. I drove the car to the mechanic. They replaced everything inside. This gearbox apparently is the same as the Toyota RAV4 diesel AWD, so maybe because of using "Toyota" parts are cheaper than "Lexus" Is the good thing about being in Europe.
Now the car goes as new.
