Default DEAD AWD Trans?

my OG thread:

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/rx-1st-gen-1999-2003/952590-free-rx-owner.html

Well I have been waiting for this day to come. Just didn't expect to happen after I did all the belts/water pump/pulleys/fluids 30 days ago.

Original owner.
AWD
2003 RX300
224,000 miles

Trans fluids flushed many times.

Driving down highway, stop and go traffic. Completely stopped (in middle of 20 miles of driving), press gas, and REV goes to the sky. Try again, same thing. Put it in Park, Reverse, Drive, nothing. Turn off car.
Wait for tow truck middle of the 405 traffic. 2 hours later police, and tow truck come.

Tow truck won't take it to mechanic shop because it is closed, and they have policy not to leave the car somewhere unattended. SIGH.

Tow the RX to my house.. can't get it off the truck. 20 minutes, no wheels are moving. Dolly it down inch by inch.

Tomrorow I have to get another tow truck to take it to the mechanic.

I knew this day would come, but I was hoping to get 300-350k miles out of it, and hand it down to the kid.

How much should shop charge to replace?

Find the lowest mileage transmission you can and hope claimed mileage is true. And the unit is good. Don't know what a shop would charge, it is a couple days of work. Another option is troll the classified ads looking for an RX with body damage.

Or search 30510-48021-84 might be worth it to buy a reman from Lexus.

Call before flat bedding your RX from place to place. Discuss worst case scenario so that you are prepared.

I would let the mechanic buy the used/refurbished transmission and be responsible for returning the old. This should have you covered for any rework post fix. Get the written warranty.

Pricing from other members would not be valid and you have to talk to the repair facility. Ball park number is 6K.

Q: Why were you flushing the trans in the past? Drain and fill would have been appropriate.

This is kind of curious: "Tow the RX to my house.. can't get it off the truck. 20 minutes, no wheels are moving. Dolly it down inch by inch."
I guess it could have seized but I've never seen it

i used the wrong terminology. it was always drained and filled multiple times.

was only towing to regular mechanic. them being closed, tow truck wouldn’t take it. thus the extra tow home.

at 100 k miles we had lots of shifting issue, drain and fill covered it

at 180k wouldnt go in reverse / drain and fill again helped

at 207 again wouldnt go in reverse, again drain and fill helped.

Filter tends to clog up on these transmissions. Toyota knew there was a problem with excess material shedding, problem is the there is not enough filter media surface area combined with the type of media used.

Sounds like you did everything you could to prevent failure.

After overnight sitting:

Started the RX.

-If you move it to R, rpm drops as if in gear. Press slight gas, no movement. No weird sounds.
-If you move it to N, RPM goes up to idle.
Which feels like the gear is "engaging" but car is not moving.
-If you go to D, 2, L, whine starts. No movement, if you press gas. Almost like all wheels have E brake on.
