should i get turbo for automatic?
hello... right now i have stock 2002 is 300 auto... although i know manual is the choice for racing, i was wondering if auto's can still put up a competition... also what is the best turbo charger for its money/ reliability? TBKO, Toyomoto, or Powerhouse Racing?
Automatic is better for turbo cars than manual because with a manual you have to drop boost(let off the gas) in order to shift whereas with an automatic you do not
. Also an auto Supra TT will beat a manual Supra TT 9 out of ten times in straight line performance(I have the timeslips to prove it).

Built auto trannys can hold high hp very well though, as far as longevity I am not sure manual or autos hold very high hp for long periods of time reliably.
BTW I still would prefer a built/modified automatic turbo car for sure. I really like SMGII type auto tranny's that shift faster than any manuals in the world no matter how good the driver is at shifting. Plus there are so many other reasons why I prefer autos like consistency, better emissions(manual Turbo Supras were illegal in some states, conveiniance, etc...

IS3, maybe you are thinking of SMGI(crappy SMG), I am talking about SMGII which is just like a tiptronic(i.e. no clutch, no releasing of gas pedal needed, just move the ****/buttons/paddle). Tiptronic type transmissions are always classified as automatics . And the SMG II on level 6 DEFINATELY shifts faster than any manual in the world, I will pull up the article on it for you when I find it. no, i am not speaking of SMG, im speaking of SMGII (hence the sensitivity setting i mentioned). SMG - sequential manual gearbox, it is NOT a tiptronic type transmission. tiptronic = auto. smg = clutchless sequential, the same type of transmission used in ferrari f360 and f1 (except f1 has 7spd, the SMG has 6) race cars. the technical term for it is semi-automatic, but it is not an auto tranny. getrag calls it the AMT (automated manual transmission). read up on if if you do not believe me
it is not people's consideration that makes it true, but rather its engineering and design. btw, SMGII does use the shifter for shiftin (up and down) or you could use paddle as you mentioned.

Also, with a modified clutch you should be able to shift fairly fast and if you know how to double clutch that would also help

as to SMG-II, it's nothing like tiptronic, which are basically fancy automatics, the SMG-II is a full manual clutchless sequential tranny, it just does the actual shifting for you.

LexusIS, I have used the BMW Semi-automatic shifter & to me it was easier to use than the GS4's Tiptronic. You shift gears by just slapping the little shifter to the left or the right and it will shift into the next gear for you AUTOMATICALLY
if you stay at high RPM's for too long (it's basically an automatic transmission that let's you pretend you are driving a manual while providing a safety net below ). You can just put the car in D and you can forget to shift the whole time and not worry because it will just shift for you. To me that's definately not a manual, you might call it semi-automatic but I feel that manual was thrown in the name to make it sound more appealing to diehard manual fans(or so that people who would at one time only drive manual would not feel bad thinking that they now drive an automatic but rather they are driving a "Sequential Manual Gearbox"

hmmmm. sorry to break this to you, but there is no such thing as "D" in SMG. you have two driving mode, "S" mode for sequential manual and "A" mode for automated (not automatic). in the "S" mode, you will bounce off the rev limiter if you do not shift, no, it will not shift for you. and the shift is not from left to right or right to left, it is up and down. i don't know what "smg" you were driving, but apparently, it wasn't a real one
