Default The over played topic: best performance options (intake combo)...

Here we go...

I have done research, but I just cannot find the answers that I want. I have gs400 with a akimoto intake, I was the lucky choosen one to work with Jeff on his catback system, which is has a great sound and looks good too, and I have a SAFC II (not tuned yet).

So my questions are:
Should I persuit buying a used SRT w/o ecu and tune it?
What will be the difference in performance gains? And is it worth it?
What would be the difference with day to day driving, if any?
Or should I just stick it out with the Akimoto intake?

I plan on adding headers eventually...hopefully in next couple of months. I will also add TM plugs once my wedding is all done and I do the ole seafoam cleaing. I really want to know where I can expect to be with hp. I wanted to know who with a N/A V8 is producing the most hp. I know hp isnt everything, but right now its been a big question in my mind. Rock-A-Lex has provided me with great reading and research...a thanks goes out to you.

Of course I'll also add the TC too for the loss on the low end in torque...maybe the gears too, but not for sure.

Any one who has a opinion or knowledge please chime in on this one.

ok well your plans sounds like TM plugs, intake with SAFC instead of ECU piggyback, TC eventually, headers, and exhaust.

IMO, since you already have the SAFC, sell the akimoto and grab a K&N intake. I have had excellent luck with their products in the past and I think you will be more happy with it. With that intake, combined with everything else (you may want to think about a 3.76 LSD for a little more oomph) you'll have a pretty decent beast on your hands.

this seems to be the combo most GS4 guys are running outside of the SRT

Thanks...

As far as I can tell, the only difference between the SRT and K&N is the material. The SRT is ceramic and the K&N plastic. Do they both have the same diameter? What is the difference in them?

SRT 3.5"
K&N 3"

This is also my plan, I already have the SRT pipe and NEO. However; I do foresee a problem with the set up. SRT pipe throws the MAF readings off due to its larger diameter. It does not read the air flow accurately and it argues with the O2 sensor, therefore messing up everything associated with the A/F Ratio. The only thing I can come up with and hope it will work, would be to retune the entire fuel trim, from idel, cruise all the way to WOT. Which is something I have yet to see someone do on a NA GS4.

Well then why is the K&N better than the akimoto if they have the same pipe size? Wouldnt I be better off keeping the akimoto and going from there? Or is it worth the investment of the K&N for the plastice piping?

I have Akimoto intake right know and I could not tell any difference from when I had the K&N intake. However; I know the Akimoto will have more heat soak for two reason. No heat shield on filter area and the fact that it is not made out of plastic like K&N. Someone did an air temp readings between K&N and SRT, K&N showed lower air temp inside the intake over the SRT. Now, how much impact if any, or will that even affect hp if dynod? No one really knows, but like I said, I could not tell the difference between the two. If I were you, I would tune with the intake you already have, no sense in spending extra money on another intake. You can source a heat shield for the Akimoto or wrap the pipe if your really concerned about the heat in your current intake.
