Check with some auto stores (Pep Boys, Autozone) and get the windshield repair kit. It is only good for small circular nicks, and not for hairline cracks, which will require the windshield to be replaced completely if it gets too long.
will your insurance company cover a new windshield? That would be safest. In MA we can request one/year at no cost to the owner if it is need of repair (cracks, pits, damage, etc).
I used a service called "Mr Chips" in New Jersey on our 93LS. They used what looked like a dental drill to prepare the chip and then a filling compound which they cured with a UV light. They came to my house and I was suprised to find out that the insurance companies generally wave the deductable if you use this service as opposed to replacing the windshield. They claim it is guarenteed and state it is better than a replacement because the factory windshield seal is not broken. I was very happy with the result especially since it was FREE !!
I currently have a small dime sized crack on my windshield thanks to a gravel truck on the freeway. I tried to get it repaired, but no company would touch it b/c the crack is "in the drivers view." I'd prefer to keep the original windshield, but I have no choice but to replace it.
SC4: Thanks for the advice. I know my insurance company will replace the windshield, minus a $100 deductable. I just wanted to keep the original glass...I'm just paranoid about potential problems d/t a bad replacement job.
Its true that you can usually have rock-chips repaired for free.. A buddy of mine here in Colorado owns a Novus Auto Glass franchise, and they repair a crack or chip on up to 20 cars a day, and most of the reputable insurance companies will waive the deductable, for what basically ends up being a free repair for you.
