Add a water pump if you are doing a timing belt...

You thinkin dealer or aftermarket shop?

I will say it for him, aftermarket shop.... At dealer it will cost around $900.00 for Timing belt, water pump, front crank seal, cam seals and belt. Plus, the car is 17 years old he may need idle pulley, fan bracket, etc...

Please explain " all the gaskets". You have valve cover gasket, oil pan sealant, trans pan sealant and rear main seal. If those gaskets or seals doesn't leak, don't replace it.

4.6 hours labor for the timing belt...
1.1 hours for the spark plug wires
1.1 hours for the spark plugs...

timing belt obviously includes the serpentine belt, and you should be able to negotiate a shorter labor time on the wire installation price as most of it has to be done to do the belt and spark plugs anyways...

Exactly what you guys said. The guys told me he'll do it in multiple stages since he knows it will be too much in term of cost to replace everything.

$350 just to replace
- Spark plugs
- Coils
- Wires
- Serp belt

Still need
- Water pump
- Idler pulley
- Timing belt
- Valve covers gaskets (leak both sides)
- Valves need to be re-valved or something
- Something he said with the cams has to be replaced too
- Oil pan gasket (leak)
- Transmission oil pain gasket (leak)

Well, here's the deal... if you are doing valve cover gaskets and timing belt at the same time, there should be no charge for replacing spark plugs and wires... same with the serpentine belt - if doing timing belt at the same time, there should be no charge for the serp belt...

the oil pan and trans pan gasket leaks are probably minor and can wait...

why are we replacing coils??? is there a problem with one (there are two)? It would be better maintenance minded to replace the caps and rotors rather than the coils unless there is something wrong with them... Labor for caps/rotors should be almost nothing as well if done the same time as the timing belt...

Valve seals, SC400, 1992 (you didn't say what kind of car, so I just used what the OP's car was)

18.8 hours book time, includes R&I both cylinder heads...

keep in mind you'll also need the seals at roughly $6 a piece through the dealer, head gasket set and other pertinent gaskets and seals...

Most reputable shops charge between 80 and 100 / hour depending on where you live...

Labor time, you are looking somewhere between 1500 and 1900, then parts of course...

I haven't looked into doing them on the Lexus', but there is a cheating way to do it on some cars by pressurizing the cylinder through the spark plug hole which keeps the valves in place while you replace the seals... most shops will not do this, as if something goes wrong they'll have to pull the head after all...
