Doing the valve train adjustment on my 93 LS400 and there is an excessive ammount of oil sludge and coking on the cam caps. I have never seen anything this thick, its roughly 1/8-1/4" thick. Does anyone have insightful knowledge as to what is the best way to remove this? I can't really start the car right now so I can't put anything in the oil.

Also, what causes this? I never use anything except mobil 1 and its changed every 3500 miles so I guess this is all the previous owners fault.

 

cant do ne thing with sludge. if u clean it. only going to make ur car worse. and if u dont clean it its going to get worse., at this point ur at a lose lose situation

 

So don't go get a can of Motul engine cleaner after I get it all back together and dump it in?

 

I haven't seen a Ls400 with a sludge problem. Do you have any picture? This is would an interesting learn for me. Thank you.

Sadly my camera broke when I was trying to take a picture of it. I'll see if I can find one to borrow. I thought this was odd also, I've never had a motor with sludge before.

 

You could try using Auto-RX. Supposedly it works very well.

I would second Auto-RX.

In Mexico, we use Liqui Moly Engine Flush, but not sure this would work on the sludge you have. Auto-RX is the best option here.

 

I REALLY DISAGREE. with old age of the car dirt deposits into cracks and STOPS leaks. if u clean it. u remove the dirt and cause leaks. thats y ppl say dont use syn after 100k miles. and with sludge in ur motor. guess what its doin sealing leaks or temp fix a problem. if u clean it. its goin to make things worse. ive seen it happen over and over again. its just like chaning ur trans fluid when ur trans is slipping. its going to make it worse

 

Auto-RX is designed for problematic engines, sludged up engines, and worn engines. It will fill in the gaps in the seals where sludge once was. Read more on their website.

Find a reputable shop to do a flush on your engine. Motor is off during the flush. Do it ASAP, then get the valves adjusted.http://www.motorlife.com/

yes i did my homework. and also syn is known to leave a graphite substance in oil
