I am in the market for 460 and came across this. How common are the paint peels? I have LS400 and still it shines as it is from factory day one. Wondering anything about ls460 and paint issues as is is not something I have seen in the forum regularly from my research.

On another note, how would you fix this? I dont think I can repaint the whole body

 

246k miles? Don't think I'd want to get involved with that regardless of price...

 

To me it looks like clear coat failure. I've never seen this on a LS before. I'd bet at one point it was re-painted. It can be fixed but, not sure what is under it all, could be hiding bigger issues(why was it re-painted, big past damage ?). Depending on your budget, you should be able to find one for a reasonable price with lower miles...

I would avoid this one myself...

You'd probably have to repaint the entire car as matching the old would be quite difficult imo.

 

Once you see clear coat failure on part of the car the rest is not far behind. Car needs a full repaint.

 

A full recoat of clear I reckon. Though perhaps you can blend the low spots of clear with the high spots. I don't think you'd have to mess with the base paint. It was probably parked underneath a tree that dripped all over it. Stuff is acidic believe it or not.

 

Any car left out in the sun for 10+ years is going to do that. CA sun can be pretty brutal!

 

There seamed to be an industry wide issue around 06-09, I see lots of cars of that era with clear peeling. My 07 Civic's paint is toast, missed the warranty extension by 1 month.

 

Lexus manufactures LS models to a higher standard than other models. Do a search about the perfection of the "Takumi" masters who do the body paint work. It'll bring a new respect for Lexus and the LS model. I'm not aware of any manufacturing defects of any LS paint. Pre 2013 LS cars had some known issues with control arms, brake system and sticky interiors but it's likely any pre 2013 car has had those issues corrected by now. Look for it in the repair history. If you're considering 2013 or newer, a good history of maintenance is likely to yield a worry free car.
