Ticking Noise
Anyone been able to stop the ticking from the high-pressure direct injectors? I know that it is normal, but still it can get annoying sometimes. YES I just turn the radio up a little. :-)

The ticking is the normal ticket everyone has spoken about that apparently is the fuel injection rails that sit on top of the engine. You cannot hear it outside unless you REALLY listen, but with the radio off, it reminds of the old Chevy engines with a lifter tapping. I know it is no issue and wont take it to the dealer to waste mine and their time, but just wondering if anyone has found a way to REALLY minimize it.

How does your car compare to other cars that you drive as to noise? If you stop your car at a traffic signal near a busy intersection, with the windows up, how does the noise level compare to other cars in similar conditions.

My 2005 Nissan Titan has less "lifter"/"engine"/"fuel injector" noise than my 2008 Lexus LS460 and its depressing. I mean seriously.. why does a 12 year old truck have less engine noise (in-cabin) than a luxury sedan at any age?
Each time I took my car to the dealer they claimed it was "normal fuel rail" noise.. but honestly why would a $70K sedan have more engine noise than a $30K truck?

Happy you have the better end of the technical issues. I saved up for 3 years to purchase a used Lexus and thought it would be a dream car only to find it was a nice vehicle but had a lot of issues I didn't research beforehand.
Oh.. and it seems I also have the gooey dash/door issue.. which my 3 year older truck somehow doesn't. That is my next task.. as I thought it was only my car having this problem... being used and having a female owner before me (guessing.. as I noted lots of fingernail scars on the interior). Within less than a year after my purchase I noticed the door handle and glovebox having more and more damage but that wasn't covered by my extended Carmax warranty =P.

I won't be able to get to the dealer this week as I'm swamped at work. I'd compare the warranty that carmax provides against anything your lender can provide.
My truck (2005 Nissan Titan) has been used for towing so maybe it will add to the delta. I'll try to upload a sound byte of both engines at idle and warmed up.. so you can all hear it.

Your 2005 Nissan Titan isn't direct injected, your 2008 LS460 is. Big difference. Just about every new car on the road is direct injected today, these systems are louder than traditional port injected vehicles. Some companies insulate the high pressure fuel pumps to reduce noise, some don't.
The LS460 has very little sound insulation in the actual engine compartment, instead insulates inside and around the cabin.
I personally can't hear the "ticking noise" when I'm inside the car unless my windows are down. I can definitely here it when I'm out of the car. You could do some research on insulating the fuel pumps and rail, that would probably be your best bet. Or you can just flat out sell the car. But any new car you purchase will sound the same, if not worse (you should hear an Audi A4, it makes the LS sound whisper quiet in comparison).

I finally got my dealer to acknowledge in writing that piston slap could also be a possibility on my 2012. They are going to have a Lexus regional rep listen to it. Mine sounds much more like how a bad lifter would sound in an old US car.

Sadly enough, I'm happy I'm not the only one with this problem. My Lexus has 58K miles and has had the sound pretty much since I've had it.
