It’s easy to check the age of the map database in your vehicle once you know what Generation navigation system is in your Lexus. Refer to the “What to Order” section of this website for a chart that will help you determine the Generation navigation system based on your Lexus model and model year.
The map version is a numerical code indicating the calendar year in which the map database was created. For example, v14.1 is the map database created in CY14. So, the smaller the version number, the older the map database.

Unless it has been updated a long the line sometime it generally is the version 1 year behind the model year of the car. On my 2010 I had version 9. I now have version 14 as I updated in 2015 when Lexus had a sale on the current version coming out on the 2015 models.
As to whether it's worthwhile to get the most recent data, it depends on how much one relies on the maps and whether or not there were updates to the areas one drives in. It's a personal decision. My most recent update is from 2014. I'll probably get one next year.
ETA: Even though I mostly use my phone for navigation, it's mostly for the audio directions. The map on the Lexus nav screen is very useful. I often use the built-in Bluetooth so that the navigation prompts go through the car's speakers. Although the display doesn't have the features it would if I used the car's navigation, it's good enough for now.
That's one reason why I want a car map upgrade eventually.
Honestly, I didn't notice a single difference when I updated my 2007 LS (with the 2006 map) to the 2015 update (the 2014 map).
Keith, by upgrading you did rid yourself of pressing "I agree" to the warning every time you started the car.

I guess it depends on how roads have changed and new roads that were put in. In my area the infamous Big Dig changed and added many roads. I updated once and only to get rid of the "I agree" task. I guess it also updates various POI's, but I never use that function anyway.
We have friends who bought a house in a new development. Their street wasn't on my original map, but was included in the update.
BTW, dealers will sometimes have sales on the update, and even if then don't, the price plus labor could be negotiable.
Just looked at my map version.....10.1 so as a 2011 it's never been updated. I guess I should bite the bullet and get the latest version updated to get rid of the warning screen and get the latest roads.
It''s a 2014 Lexus USB drive with map updates (I am sure it does the music DB update as well). and it's $30, my system has 6.1 on it (on my 2007).
If I was to buy this update (as it's cheap), how does one install it on a 2007 LS460L ? Where is the USB slot for this drive to update it?
I went into the menu and found a place to update navigation software and the music DB. If you select it, it shows a empty page.
Would want to update to at least 2010, as on the way to work there is a bridge that was finished in 2010, so pretty much with a old update your flying over water !
I could be wrong, but this usb stick has the map info that you install into the Techstream Software on a Laptop, which then uploads into your car? I believe a security code is also required. Others can chime in, but that's how I recall it,
