Default Nav screen on or off

Which is normal? Should Nav screen be on or off after you start the car?
Only have put 2K miles on my 2011 460, so I am not used to everything yet.
But I was ready to get the dealer to program the screen to default to off. It was always showing the map every time I started the car. So every time I hit screen off. Most of the time I don’t use it and figured to save wear and tear on the screen. I checked the manual and it said the dealer had to change this. Was not one of the settings I could change. And I did not see a place to change it myself.

Now recently it may have changed itself. When I start the car the screen shows Lexus Enform for a few seconds then goes black or screen is off. Except when I use reverse and the backup camera in on. This is great and what I wanted. But why did it change and what is normal. Did I change a setting somehow that could only be done by the dealer?
Seems strange.

Thanks

If you manually turned it off..it will remember the setting the next time until you hit one of the buttons to turn the screen on again it will keep working that way. I run with my display off too for that exact reason

I guess before it was not remembering the setting. I would turn it off but would go back to map the next time I drove the car.

This all started for me back in my Hyundai days..around 1992. The damn dash cluster lights would burn out fast and they were a beatch to replace..so I drove with them dimmer than normal and they never burned out lol. At night especially, if I don't need the screen on I just turn it off. When it is on, it's because I have my Android phone emulated on the nav screen via my IVIC

It's better to burn out then fade away!!!! With all your sweet mods, you don't strike me as a half way type of guy. Come on dude, let the big dog eat!!!

And keeping things dim might actually shorten their life.

Just don't see the need. Cant say it looks so great that it looks better on or off.
And I plan on keeping the car 10 years. Have not decided yet on extended warranty. But what is the price of a new screen, 8K.

Screen on for????? To see the same map of the same street of the same town that you've lived on for the last God knows how many years? LOL. The screen comes on temporarily when I switch a channel, adjust something or whatever. That's good enough for me. However, like TEE said...screen on for IVIC etc.

I had NAV in my two previous LS's with mileage over 120K and never turned the screen off, I think the electronics in our cars are more reliable/solid than say our German competitors. Sure components can fail or have rare bug but I'm not going to be paranoid about something breaking spoils the ownership experience so I enjoy the car and all it's features. I don't think I ever said this on CL, I have to say that I love my car!

I agree with this.

If it helps, my old 2003 ES300 is still in the family. 170k miles now and going on 11 years old. Screen has never been turned off, still works great. These screens are very long lived.

I like having the map up there all the time, plus its a feature of my car and I see no reason to turn off the big beautiful screen.

Wink

There's nothing wrong with having the navi screen on or off because it's design to last. With only 2K miles what's the worry. So enjoy your Lexus LS 460.
