I just swtched from a 2009 LS to a 2012 (both with ML). In the 2009, I usually drove with the volume level at 15 to 18. To get the same volume on the 2012, I need to set it at 35 to 40. Is this normal (35 to 40 in the 2009 would have required ear plugs)?

Have you tried fiddling with the settings? The car usually comes defaulted to treble, bass and mid in the middle. Of course, previous owner might have changed the settings too.

the system in the 2012, ML or not IMO really sucks. my brother just bought one and we're in the car saying WTF is going on with this system. he's throwing a 12" sub in the trunk with a 5 channel amp and a signal processor for the interior speakers.
I remember reading somewhere on here, that the newer 2010+ model ML system was nowhere near as good as the older one. Something about the bass staying the same no matter how high the volume is...I think?
my opinion , is that 2007-2009 owners were suffering from fried amplifier ,it is been reported that high sound volume could cause this issue , so I think Lexus has set up a maximum limit to avoid causing (fried amp ) issue .
07-09 had amplifier issues.. to save blown amps they restricted the power output...sucks.. if would have made more sense to beef up the amp..than to tune it down. a 380hp engine tuned down to 220hp just sucks.. why not 500hp an be done with it.....
