I saw a recent post where adding fuel system cleaner removed the idling problem. I was just curious on how many of you use fuel system cleaners? If so, any noticeable results?
Higher octane fuels have absolutely no benefit in regard to cleaning fuel systems. There are additives in most brands to help with cleaning, the most effective by far is Chevron with the Tecron additive. In my tenure at a GM dealership they even admitted the results were better than their own Top engine cleaner additive....that was disclosed at a parts and service meeting by a GM engineer, they were demonstrating research they had done to determine the most efficient cleaning techniques. Injector deposits were not the biggest issue though, the main problem is carbon buildup on the back side of the intake valves.
Zmax fuel and engine aditive has been the only real diffrence maker that i have noticed and if u dont belive me just try it, i also tend to use STP fuel system cleaner evrey oil change and Z max Automatic transmission fluid aditive and always use Shell 93 octane V-Power cause its got cleaning aditives already in it plus shell mixes no ethanol in with their gas so it doesn;t hinder preformance

Shell has ethanol in their fuel now -- just recently announced it (I think this applied to all states).
Fuel system cleaners cause the oil to thicken (increase viscosity) significantly. IF you are going to use it, you should only use it for a tank or two just prior to changing oil. There is a LOT, LOT, LOT of bull***** in the fuel and oil additive business. I am lucky to personally know a PhD lubricants and fuel additives engineer with about 40 years experience who answers my questions based upon science, knowledge, and experience...
MOST of the fuel system cleaners and oil additives are worthless snake oil.
ok......well with that said which ones aren't acording to your reliable source?
Frankly, I can't recall what he said about specific ones, except that my conclusion for my personal purposes was that I won't be using any of them as I don't think they are needed, and MIGHT actually cause problems of some sort. But, if I were going to add something, it'd probably be the X-1R stuff. I recall that Chevron Techron is about as good as it gets in terms of add-in fuel system cleaner (and also X-1R stuff, but that's mostly only available on line). I recall that various gasolines contain various detergent packages that are more or less effective on various types of deposits, and switching up -- burning a few tanks of one, then a few tanks of another -- is most likely to give maximum benefits from those packages that are already in the fuel. Those tidbits, plus the fact that IF you run a fuel system cleaner, you should do it just a couple of tankfulls prior to changing the oil due to the viscosity increase in the oil that results from the combusion byproducts. Sorry I can't recall more...
