Default Hello!

Good day to all,

I have just joined the community as I have a 1993 LS400 import from Hong Kong (I live in the UK).

I plan on keeping this one for a while and have some plans to modify it to my liking. Its not going to be my daily barge, just a fun car for the weekend.

However, I do have a serious problem with it at the moment. I have been told by Lexus that it has issues with the ECU. It was running great, then after the car had been sitting for a while it developed a rough idle and then it was almost impossible to drive because of it. After spending 20 hours on Lexus labour charges, they said to me it was likely that the fault lies within the ECU. After finding this out, I google'd the issue and came across Club Lexus and the story about capacitors leaking!

Anyway, I have to get the ECU out and hope to have it repaired - the bad news is no one has ever seen this particular ECU in my part of the world because its a Hong Kong car. If anyone knows of company or individual who would look at my ECU and hopefully repair it that would be greatly appreciated. I also have a blurry climate control display that needs sorted but again I have found no one near me who would be willing to fix it.

I am also in the market for some accessories for the car such as the JDM red/clear tail lights which are proving rather difficult to find and clear side repeaters. Again, if you guys know of a source then I would be sincerely thankful.

Anyway, just felt to say hi to everyone.

Thanks

Why don't you ask this girl
to help?
One idea is to try like this girl in accordance with the capacitor's thread.

Still early in the morning for my brain to be engaged properly...LOL.

As Yamae posted. Not a difficult job with the instructions as listed in the ECU thread. A decent soldering iron and parts as listed you'll be able to perform the task yourself. If determined get some junk PCB to practice desoldering and soldering on. Otherwise, finding a local electronics shop to swap the capacitors out.

Thank you RA40 for the welcome and for the link.

I am not much use at all with electronic repairs (and manual repairs for that matter).

My ECU code is 89661-50180. It has not been easy finding anyone with confident knowledge as to how to fix it here in the UK. Even Lexus are not certain that this is the problem, but they can not think of anything else that it could be.

Thanks for your help.

Thank you Yamae for the reply.

I have seen your name come up a few times on the club already!

Yes, I think the lady in the video is far more able than I am when it comes to dealing with electronic repairs!

I am still looking for someone that can help me fix my ECU and ideally I would send it off to be repaired. If you know of anyone that would be great!

My faults at the moment are rough idle and the car is going through fuel. Lexus have told me its not drivable and until the ECU is checked (and repaired) then it can not be used.

Its a shame really, as the car has actually been mind for a few years but for the last 3 years its been in storage. Only ever since using it again these troubles have come to light. Its only covered 44,000 kms as well!

Thanks for all your efforts.

Well, I found someone on google who has offered to have a look at my ECU. Its now packaged and off in the post. I will report back as to how it goes (just in case anyone else finds this helpful).

In the mean time, do you guys know if US spec tail lights from a UCF10 will fit Japan/Hong Kong spec LS400 UCF10 models? I can only find US spec red/clear tail lights and I really want them to fit but the company I have just asked said he thinks not.

Hope it goes well for you. I a short moment of extra energy I did buy most of the recommended capacitors.
It proved to be a difficult to get hold of the high temperature specified ones recommended.
I Eventually ended up one type short after allowing months from different suppliers.
My ECU is still Ok after 24 years.
If I had it done at someone else. I would worry a bit about the capacitor quality grade used.
They were not expensive. Just on backorder a lot.

Thanks for the reply. I know exactly what you are saying. Sadly I don't have much choice at the moment as the car is currently sitting at the dealership and they want it gone. I have no knowledge on how to fix the ECU myself either. The company I found does seem very professional and very well reviewed so we will see what happens. Thanks

For the tail lights, have a look at this post a made a few months back:

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls-...l#post10533445

This was with regards to an owner who had an AUDM LS and wanted to install the Depo clear tail lights.

Thank you for this, very interesting. So, do you think the US and JDM lights are pretty much the exact same? When you mention the middle light, are you referring to the one in the rear window?

Correct - the "middle" brake light is referring to the high mounted brake light, or the one behind the glass.

As far as I'm aware, the US and JDM light housings are identical. The bolt pattern looks exactly the same, as per photos I've found online.
