1997 LS400 key program
I own a 1997 LS400 and unfortunately lost a key. I now have a new one but I can't find any information on how to program the key (not the remote)..Anyone know how to program the key?..Seems the programming is different than that of a 1998 LS400..
Thanks in advance,
David

'97 Lexus LS400 only
This system is based on the Texas Instruments fixed code transponder. The onboard computer cannot be programmed without a working pre-programmed transponder key. Duplicate keys can be programmed into the system as long as there is at least one working pre-programmed key available. The system can accept a maximum of 6 different keys
Because the coding of the keys is proprietary and is protected by copyright law, cloning is not possible at this time for this system. Until Texas Instruments agrees to license this technology, the only way to program duplicate keys will be by the process outlined below.
Key blanks: Ilco / Silca TOY40BT4
Replacement key blanks can be ordered through any Lexus dealer.
Programming Steps:
1. Enter the car and close all doors. Simultaneously depress and release both the brake and accelerator pedals.
2. Within 5 seconds, insert the working pre-programmed key into the ignition and cycle the ignition from the "off" position to the "on" position 5 times. Leave the ignition in the "on" position.
3. Within 15 seconds, open and close the driver’s side door one time.
4. Within 20 seconds, open and close the driver’s side door 5 more times.
5. Within 20 seconds, remove the working key from the ignition.
6. Within 10 seconds, insert the newly cut transponder key into the ignition, and turn the ignition to the "on" position.
7. Leave the new key in the ignition for at least 60 seconds.
8. After 60 seconds the programming should be complete.
9. If you are programming additional keys, insert the next key within 10 seconds of removing the last, and turn the ignition to the "on" position. Once again, leave the key in the “on” position for at least 60 seconds.
10.
Start the vehicle to verify that programming has been successful.

Grand LS4,
Thanks for the quick response..
I've had no luck in programming the key based on your instructions....Any suggestions on what I may be doing wrong?
i did pull up a website where it talks about using the gas pedal/brake pedal and watching the security light (mine dosen't work) to program but I've had no success with that particular method either..
Thank you!

Just re-read the prior programming post...same. My quick glance I thought it was bit different.
This is from my '97 service manual:
Start
1.All doors closed. Key not in cylinder.
2. Insert already registered master key in cylinder
3. Ignition switch: lock-on 5 times
4. Open close driver door 6 times
5. Removee master key
6. Insert key to be registered into key cylinder
7. Keep ignition switch in ON position for 60 seconds or more
8. Remove key
9. (Will you register another...goto 6)
10 If NO open close driver door.

I did not need a master key to programm a new one, existing working/programmed key worked for me
at first it did not want to work, i had to open the door and wait for about 1 minute and all worked fine

I know that this is an old post but still relevant for folks like myself who has a 1997 LS400. After getting to keys cut to key code, I was able to use instructions provided by member "Grand LS4"
And you need the master key to program extra keys. Do not try to use the valet key to program because it wont program. I had to use the master ky for programming. Using "Grand Ls4" instructions, I was able to program my first key but not my second one. Lexus keys can only be programmed by the car computer I think 3 times Having just that extra key gives me peace of mind though. Thanks Grand LS4.
