Default Programming new key fob?

I need a duplicate key for my '98 Lexus LS400 and found one on eBay for $28. Do I need to re-program it to open the door and use the auto-lock and other features of the original key?

Yes, the electronic functions of transponder and access will need to be programmed.

There's a link to a PDF file download explaining how to program the key fob for a 1998-2000 Lexus LS400 in the UCF20/21 frequently asked questions sticky.

So I tried programming the key today and followed the instructions in the PDF. I'm confused with part B(e)..."Insert the key into the ignition and cycle the key from LOCK to ON to UNLOCK". I'm assuming this means you click the LOCK and UNLOCK parts of the remote, but what does "ON" mean?

Also, when I tried opening the door with the key manually and trying to start the engine manually, it won't open the door or start the engine. Do I need to program the key first? Thanks!

You cycle the key in the ignition from lock to on to lock.

So I guess if the key doesn't move at all in the ignition, it doesn't fit.

Is the key cut for your car? If so it should still turn but it won't start the car until it's programmed. Did you make sure the ID for the eBay key matched the numbers in the back of your original?

It won't turn at all. Looks like I'll have to find a new one.
