Default HID question

Alright, I know there has been a lot of discussion about this, but my question is relatively simple. I have a 1998 GS4 non-HID. My friend is selling his 1998 GS4 (with HID's) and told me he would be more than happy to swap headlight assemblies with me (even though he hasn't asked for any money, I will probably give him a couple hundred dollars). Anyway, is it as simple as taking his out of his car and putting them in mine? Are there any components other than the headlight assemblies that I need to take out of his car? Thanks for the help.

There are a lot of threads on this subject, just use the search button

I think you might have to do something with the ballast's or something to that nature

That's correct. They won't work without the ballast and relays, so make sure get that as well. If I'm not mistaken, they're attached to the back of the headlight assembly

Thanks, asci01. The link you posted was inactive. I guess I should just take the headlight assembly and everything attached to it.

well, i know that you wont have the auto-leveling feature work on ur car since this feature is tied into the car's computer (i believe)... also, i think i remember reading somewhere that if you put the HID from a GS into a non-HID GS, your lights will be VERY bright... like you will be blinding the on coming cars. something you might want to consider before doing... but i could see this getting moved the lights forum since there are guys there that can answer ur questions better

Just a quick summary:

1. You will need the housing, the bulb, and the ballast.
2. It is not plug and play. You will need to splice some wires.
3. As someone else has already mentioned, you will NOT have the auto-leveling. Although the unit is there, the rest of your car is not configured for it. It is not straight-forward to try to retrofit (for you to do) or cheap (for someone else to do) so I'd just forget about this feature.

For him:
1. He will need your housing and bulb.
2. It is not plug and play. He will need to splice some wires.

I used the 9006 HID conversion kit for my non-HID housing.

It works very well. I do need to aim down the headlight a bit but the light pattern is preserved.

The kit is plug n play with little wiring.

You can pm Henry for more info on the HID conversion kit.

If you do want to do the HID swap, you will definately need a set of these...
(don't worry, they're cheap)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33710

and a relay to connect the HID ballasts to your battery. DO NOT wire them to your stock wiring without any of the above items. Go to www.hidforum.com and you'll find plenty of knowledgeable guys that can make a relay setup for you for cheap as well. Now that you've got both, it should be a straight forward install as long as the housings are same exact measurements. As for auto level, fear not. Some cars with OEM reflectors like Acura TL, CL and the Honda Prius have xenons without Auto level feature. If you've see those cars and think their HID lights aren't blinding then expect to see similar performance from your units. Finally, chunk the idea of attempting Autolevel yourself. Too much technics, to much money to attempt (involves sensors at all wheels, suspension, computer etc) and like 3 Lexus Techs in the country that will help you in this process because of the above reasons. Good luck bro!
