i wouldn’t say lexus is thr first to have this feature. the honda accords already have this.
This is correct (along with the other Honda offerings). But from the article, this looks like its REPLACING the side mirrors with a camera + screen, not supplementing it like in Honda. Not sure how I feel, especially with all those screens (4 digital screens, along with your normal windshield vision, rear view mirror, and possibly a mounted phone). Seems dangerous to me.
I've actually thought about this in my mind for years. Would be way better than mirrors. Mirrors are a huge compromise. I do not like the tacked-on look from Lexus on the inside. They could've done better on the screen.
I think a nice solution to do away with those weird looking sticks on the side would be to have a flush mount wide angle camera on the side (very minimal sticking out, if any) and a camera somewhere at the back. Then combine the two on one screen for sort of a dual image.
And the Honda solution is just for changing lanes. The point of this is it REPLACES the current glass mirror system so you don't need a massive mirror (which Hondas still have). The mirror is unneeded weight, blocks sight lines, and is noisy and not very aero.
I don't want it, but then I am becoming a bit of a curmudgeon. In my first IS, I thought the backup camera and BSM were nice to have, but unnecessary. Now, I am grateful to have both. My folks have a Honda Civic and the center console shows a curb and right side of car view when the right turn signal is activated (so, this feature would never actually come up in a BMW...LOL) and I'm not sure what to do with it, but I think it might help with not running someone over (I have never run anyone over). I am sure if I spent more time in the driver's seat with that tech available, I would eventually get it.
