The 2019 ES Has Side-Cameras, But Do We Need Them?

Lexus exercises extreme forward thinking by redefining how we check our mirrors.

Those cameras look pretty ugly but it’s a cool concept.

Agree. Screens look tacky. But the idea is a good one. I do like mirrors but these screens are not a bad substitute.

I saw a review on youtube, it looks like the screen is on right side only, hopefully I am wrong, but if this is true, I'm speechless.

At least Audi incorporated the cameras into the door. The mini tablet use is awful. I don't see any side mirror, so if this camera goes down how do see anything?

The information I have found shows them on both sides.

I agree that the side-view displays could be (and should be) better integrated into the interior, but this was a retrofit; future cars that have them will have the displays better integrated.

That said, I personally do not like the position of Audi's side-view displays in the door panels; I find them too low so that instead of merely turning your head to the side, you have to turn your head to the side and down, taking your eyes off the road for too long.

My thoughts exactly. I think it would be cool to have them mounted in a heads up display or something? But I think the problem is how conditioned we are to look in our mirrors when changing lanes. I do think the time will come when these are common.

Damn,
Another source of light inside the cabin that I have to find a way to kill.
I have sensitive eyes whilst driving at night and INSIDE the car I like to have it black as possible.
Grrrr....

...and another source of movement that is in my peripheral vision. I do not usually like to drive with the moving map displayed on my central screen because I find it distracting; the outside wing mirrors are far enough away that they do not bother me but a driver-side rear-view monitor may be too close for my liking.
