Default Side mirror replacement

Wife smashed the side mirror while backing out of the garage today. Pics attached. The mirror itself wasn't broken. The actuator/motor and indicator lights all work fine. Dealer is recommending replacing the entire assembly for around $584. Is it easy to replace the assembly or just the cover DIY? Couldn't find any youtube videos.

In this video, the guy disassembles the mirror about 4 minutes in.

I need to replace the entire assembly, not just replace an LED. This video doesn't show that.

the plastic covers can be purchased on their own (including chrome piece) and is attached by 4 screws for about $70. This comes from Lexus painted, too. You just need to be carful not to break the mirror when replacing. I'll update this later with more info.

I took it to another shop and they told me the same thing that the entire assembly needs to be replaced. I can find a new OEM part online for $228 + tax + shipping but if I can find instructions or videos on out how to access the door panel and replace the entire assembly I can consider DIY. Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

If it is just the plastic cover that is damaged it wont be necessary to replace the entire assembly. It the mirror functions properly you just need the outer case. I looked in your profile and saw you have a 2012 IS350. The part number for the replacement cover is: 8791A-53411. There are 2 characters after that number that correspond to your paint code, so make sure you get the correct color.

As for replacing, it takes about 10-15 minutes DIY, but like I said before, be careful when removing the glass. Here's a good thread for what you should have to do (my post #5 should help). https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...or-covers.html

If that chunk on the tip didn’t break you could have just replaced cover. New mirror is 4 bolts behind door panel. Have to remove some plastic lining and comes off easily.

Here’s a spoon fed DIY from the FAQ.

Which chunk? The mirror cover comes with the front and back portion (doesn't include the piece actually touching the door).

It is hard to tell from the photos, a shot from the front of the car is needed. But it looks like only the cover part needs to be replaced, the base seems OK. The only problem is that it seems that Lexus does not sell the cover separately. The diagram on mylparts.com only shows the mirror glass, the light and the nuts that hold the mirror assembly onto the door as being available without buying the complete mirror assembly.

^ like mentioned above just get one from an eBay used one. The damage looks to be just to the caps.

damn you are correct. The two pieces are only $72 painted from dealer or online dealer plus shipping . That should be OPs best bet. No need to remove from door.

No, there was damaged to the more than the covers so the whole assembly needed to be replaced. I will post pics later. I ordered a new OEM part (pre-painted) for $238 and my local mechanic will install for $75. So a total of $315 vs $584 quoted by the Lexus dealer.

thats too much. The front and back covers are $70 painted from dealer. You most likely ordered the whole mirror assembly for $238
