Default How To Remove Mirror Covers?

I wrapped the mirror covers in 5D CF vinyl but the vinyl edges rolled up. I need to redo it and tuck the vinyl under the plastic mirror edges. I want to take off the mirror covers--I see a line implying the cover comes off but I don't know how to do it.

I found something on another site that says to angle the mirror up then reach under the gap and pop the mirror glass off. Then take out the 4 screws and the mirror plastic covers come off.

Sounds risky--don't want to break the mirror glass--anyone ever do this??

I have taken the mirrors apart on both sides of my IS in order to fix the mechanism that allows the mirror to fold. The mirror snaps into a plate that holds it. You pull the bottom edge of the mirror out from the housing then slide it down to unhook some fingers.

Watch this video on how to take the mirror apart - www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TBl8Cqi0k4

The guy is like a bull in a china shop but he gets the job done without breaking anything. While you have the housing apart, check the spring retainer that it isn't coming off. It should be maybe a half inch down the post. One thing I did when I fixed my mirrors, I drilled a hole through the post and put a cotter pin in it so it won't come off again.

if you have heated mirrors just becareful when taking off and putting it back on. if you are not careful it could break and you will have a oil-stain looking mirror. trust me it happened to me. the trick to taking it off is tilt the mirror using the controls before trying to pry it off. putting it back on is more tricky, this is when you have to be careful dont force it back on.

I've done this plenty of times and figured out the hard way what breaks the glass and how to avoid it. The video provided is spot on, but the risky part is clicking the glass back in.

To ensure you do not break the glass when reinstalling, there is a small plastic ring that sits around the glass and connects to the plastic backing plate. Remove the outer ring and separate the glass from the plastic backing (held together by some putty-like adhesive). Then click the plastic backing plate into place, stick the mirror on and reinstall the outer retention ring.

You guys are right that it comes apart easier than it goes together. The light in the bottom of the mirror is a pain to keep in alignment so you can put the housing back on and the mirror requires some patience. But I just kept swearing at the mirrors until they snapped in, I didn't take them out of the frame.

I had the covers removed today by a tech at the auto dealer I work at. Pretty simple for him. I dropped off the covers at a wrap shop they will wrap them in CF.

Default Spots On Mirror

I got the mirror covers redone in CF looks good but now the passenger mirror has spots after reinstallation. I was afraid this would happen after taking the mirror off.

Yep, someone pressed too hard on the mirror.

Should have also installed LED puddle lamps while in there too. When I swapped my puddle lamps to LED, I avoided any issues by taking my time AND by slightly greasing up the plastic contact points to ease the reinstall.

Yea sucks and my employee price for a new mirror is $289. I see the mirrors on ebay OEM for $70?? Yes I did change out the puddles to LED.

Get a Burco mirror, they come heated or not heated for a fraction of the cost. It's what Ive used to replace them when I broke mine. And when you install it...

Sometimes hearing it a bit helps. Be weary not to melt or overheat for any reasons
