I pull my car out of the garage, and let it run while I go back in and make coffee. Maybe 2 minutes. If I leave it outside overnight or something or if I'm somewhere cold, I'll let it run until the direct injection turns on. I certainly don't sit in it while it idles though. If I have to go, I just take it easy. I have a really steep hill out of my neighborhood though that I feel bad about taking a "cold" car up.

My Land Cruiser idles for hours on end sometimes when we're out in the woods or something. It has nearly 300k on it and it still works perfectly.

That's what it sounds like after what Kurtz said.

I honestly just jump in and head off, my car hangs out in 5th gear until the engine temp warms up and then it shifts into 6th. Florida weather has been in the 70s to the high 80s.

My GF always wants to let her 350z warm up so she doesn't have to get into a cold car, and I can't really talk her out of it without any research. Can't find anything on the internet stating it's terrible for your car, most of the people just say "its bad for the environment". Also I want to get a general idea of what damage I have done to my car since I let it warm up for about 5-10 minutes several nights a week for the past winter. I always see cops idling their cars and I figured it wasn't a bad thing. Thanks Kurtz, always appreciate your input.

I'd point you (or her) to the huge 19 page idle thread I expect this thread to get merged into eventually-

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...ur-engine.html

Some specific posts with technical reasons idling/warm up is bad-

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/3035543-post152.html

the thread also has numerous references to the owners manual mention of not needing to warm it up and idling being severe duty... don't see page numbers listed, and don't know them off the top of my head though, can try and remember to check after work today.

Help yes... eliminate? no.

So my commute to work in the morning is about 10 minutes. Have no choice, kind of just the way things are. I don't let my car idle anymore (I used to) I just started it and go, anyway I can mitigate the bad effects of idling? More frequent oil changes?

Yup... and honestly the "never getting to operating temp for any length of time" is the bigger issue for you, so you don't get to burn off the crap in the oil like you should. So frequent changes.

I'd run whatever you can get cheap in the proper weight and change every 3 months.... no point in using "good" oil with changes that frequent.

Again though this is a "if you care about the car long term" thing... if you plan to get rid of it after 50k miles then do whatever you want and it probably won't make any noticeable difference during the time you own it.
