i wait for 20 seconds because that's about how long it takes me to actually get going, i wouldn't call that an engine warm-up time period. unless you live in mn (et al) you don't need to wait that long (like 2 minutes).

I must be an impatient bastard - I start it and as soon as the engine starts, I'm in R backing out of the garage. I've even put it into R before the engine even started at times!!!

Me too. My warmup is the half second or so that it takes my hand to go from the pushbutton starter to the gear lever.
I thought the manual says not to let the car warm up, just start it and go.
i think it's better to wait for a few seconds before you shift the transmission to any gear. unless someone is about to carjack you, i don't see how a couple of seconds will save you any time. better safe than sorry when it comes to the tranny.
The engine warms up better under load. The owner's manual even says, drive the car, don't let it idle to warm up. Idling is one of the worst things you can do to an engine for a lot of reasons. Just drive, but don't beat on it until its been running for about 10 minutes - the coolant may be up to temp, but the oil isn't, and the oil will bypass the filter if it's too thick and rpm is too high (over 3k or so). While it isn't instant death for unfiltered oil to go through the engine, it's not exactly the best thing in the world for a plain bearing engine either.
The gearbox is ready to go in just a few seconds. It has software to prevent damage from doing stupid things. I wouldn't worry about it at all.
if im in no hurry ill let it warm up for quite a bit about 5 min, but if I am in a hurry maybe like 1 min and I just really baby the car until it reaches norm. temp.
i turn on.. wait about a minute or so.. make sure everything i am suppose to bring is with me... then i just let the car idle down my block with slight gas... once im at the light... I GO!
I give it usually 30 seconds before i go. But i don't drive it hard until i see the temp guage near the spot where it sits when the car is fully warmed up.

Hahaaha... I do the same. Time is MONEY and cant waste it.
if I have the time I will warm the engine up for a min or two but normally I just start up and go since weather in Macao wasn't that cool...Maybe later on when it get cooler I will warm it up a bit longer!!
