Default 2016 GSF P1363 code

Hello All.

I'm struggling for the last year with my GSF throwing the P1363 code randomly. I'll just throw in the history and dates when all this happened in order to make everything clear:

-1st time I got the code was when I was tracking the car on March 2022(after a total of 5 sessions). It was in my last session when i pushed the car hard without a break for 50 minutes (my fault). Took it to the dealer and they said that the camshaft motor assembly needed replacement which fixed the issue.

-2nd time to get the code was after nearly 8 months from the cam motor fix (Nov 2022), during cruising normally, I cleared the code with MX OBD scanner and It didn't pop back, however, took it to the dealer for diagnosis. They said they couldn't reproduce the code and sent me back home.

-3rd time was a month later (December 2022), while I was parking the car. Went back to the dealer without clearing the code. The car was with them for a month and they went through the Diag tree in which everything checked ok, however since the car had a warranty left, they wanted to change the ECU and related VVT relays just to make sure(they still didn't know what was the issue). They have asked me to track the car and see if the code pops up again in the same conditions. Took the car back which seemed to fix the issue.

-Now, the 4th time after 2 months of the ECU replacement (March 2023), I tracked the car for only 4 hot laps without pushing hard and the code popped up again.
It is getting me frustrated because the car is in excellent condition with only 70K KM on it and I take really good care of it (fluids changes are all Toyota OEM).

If anyone can chime in and help I would really appreciate it.

I had something very similar happen to me. I chased the tree in TIS and tested the relays, ecu etc. I swapped in 2 new cam timing motors but I would still get a p1365 or p1367 code. I can't remember if I also got p1363 but I'm pretty sure I did. Some days the code would not come back for weeks and other times it would not clear and stay there for days. So randomly I zip tied the connector on the cam timing motor and made it somewhat tight...the code is gone. So I narrowed it down to a bad connector or connection on that connector. I'll take a picture tomorrow and show which connector I zip tied. Weird but it worked. Previously I would clear the code and it would come back in 90 miles or less. Ever since I did the zip tie it's been over 2000 miles with no codes.

If this happened to mine, I'd do what I did to my Supra when I had similar issue with the +5vdc going to the throttle position sensors and the MAP sensor. Remove the pins from the connector body, and back probe the petals in the pins to give more pressure on connection. I struggled with that pin for over a year trying to figure out if I had a ECM or wiring problem only to determine the pin connecting to the ECM was not making contact when the temperature was below 45F inside the cabin.

Hopefully this picture makes sense. It's the bottom connector I zip tied to make it more tight.

So I talked to the dealer about this specifically and said the connection tested fine. I insisted that it could pass the diagnostic test and still be faulty. They escalated the case to TMC (Toyota Motor Company Japan) , and TMC instructed them to replace all the pins in the harness responsible. Luckily they have been able to reproduce the engine code by playing with the wire suggestive of connection malfunction somewhere.

So now I'm waiting for them to fix the pins and do a pressure-fit test to make sure the connection is solid.

Will update in a couple of days.

Thank you all for your contributions it made all the difference.

That is amazing!! 100% customer support. I feel the dealers here in the USA would shrug it off and not help the customer. I'm happy to hear it's going in the right direction.

This is awesome news. I hope this fixes it for good! Would be nice to finally have an official fix for the few of us who were getting this code.

So I have picked up the car 5 days ago and the issue seems to be resolved for now. They have repaired the camshaft Bank2 harness connector. That seemed to be the culprit.

Thank you all for keeping up with me.

Thanks for updating us! Were there any part numbers listed on the service sheet? Also, do you mind sharing what dealership did the work? I want to share any info with the Lexus Tech that bought my previous car. Thanks!

Sorry for the late response. The dealer refused to give me any documents regarding the fix as per policy of the company's owner in the middle east. However, the engineer pointed out to me in the photo attached which connector was the one that got fixed. I can still see an exposed copper wire which I'll go back and point out with my next service.
I hope that helps.

Second connector with the 5 wires on the camshaft motor assembly on the passenger left side when car viewed from the front (right side when viewed from inside the car). It sits immediately below the engine cover.

I would not be happy with that as a fix. There should never be exposed copper after a repair. The red power wire also looks like it's been abused with vampire probes, also not a preferred method of test/troubleshooting when you want a reliable wiring harness well into the future.
