Default Electrical Shutdown

2006 GS 300, 90k miles. While driving the car tonight all of the lights and dash panels started flashing and power steering failed. Flashing continued for a minute or two until everything went dark, engine continued running. Turned off the car, waited a minute or two, then started the car. Everything okay for a minute and then it started all over again.

Is this the body control module (if this car has one), or something else?

Thanks, Clint

Have the charging system checked first. Make sure that the battery is fully charged before testing the alternator.

Sounds like maybe bad battery terminals, might want to remove and clean them. Also unbolt that nut on the terminal, and clean under it.

I'm going to go with a bad alternator on this one. Start easy with what ibidu1 suggested, but based off of my past experiences with alternators going out, this is pretty much what happened before they gave out completely.

Have the charging system check. I'm with everyone on the alternator going bad. Mine did the same but I also had an electrical burning smell from the engine compartment.

got the new alternator installed. My helper got ahead of me and reattached the battery negative, which became evident when the alternator positive lead touched the valve cover. Now the only power I can see is the door and footwell lights, and the ignition switch backlight. I’m too old to get under the dash to check those fuses and the underhood fuse panel checks out. Help!

Is that the block on the left side of the fuse panel located in the engine compartment?
