De carbon your intake and clean/replace the MAF sensor. This is IF you don't have a check engine light on. If so, chase that first.

I need help with my gs300 1998. Cluster turns black after few seconds when all icons come up when starting up the car. Check engine light pops on as well as all the icons for suspension. Then icons turn off. The bell noise also had a drifferent tone after a few tries of turning the car on . It turns over then dies. After that you can turn the key all the way over and nothing will happen. Heeelllpp me

A few years ago I had a vacuum leak that would cause that. Check your hoses and see if any are cracked or brittle.

I actually find that the electronic throttle in the 430 creates this feeling of hesitation or "lag". I just sold my 430 for a 400 and the throttle feeling like a whole different platform, worlds more direct.

I've driven every year GS400/430 except an '04. And the 400's are awesome, I love my '99. my Aunt has an '01, and it does this and there's nothing wrong with her car. If you kick it hard like at least half throttle it bogs down and then all the power comes in at once and the tires spin. I driven '02s with the same hesitation. The 03's do it less than the '01-02.. I have an '05 and it doesn't have his problem, the car is a beast off the line because the 430 has more torque than the 400. (Maybe in 2005, they address all the little nannies out of the car) I'm happy with my 2005 GS430 with no hesitation but the GS400 is better throttle response of course.

I drive a '99 GS400 as well and most of the time I use manual mode (steering wheel buttons). Love it. No lag at all.

My early 98 GS400 will do it coming out of a corner IF I run low octane fuel (only experimented with a couple times). So knock will cause a big hesitation as it abruptly yanks out a ton of timing.

My car has done this several times, and every single time it was a vacuum leak somewhere. The computer does not enjoy air getting in that exceeds its operational spec.
