is the VSC better? worse? or equal than the regular LSD?
I'd say a real LSD is better. It will route the power to the wheel with traction to equalize the load. On a open diff/electronically controlled system...the computer applies braking to the wheel that is spinning to equalize the load so the wheel with traction can get power. So the difference is that the e-LSD (VSC computer type) will rob some power since it's putting some brake load on the rear wheels. A mechanical LSD can do that on its own. Also another thing is that with most e-LSD setups, it's disabled when you turn off traction control. So if you want to do some drifting, a real LSD will help you out big time. With VSC on, the car wont let you step the tail sideways. And if you turn off VSC, you will lose the "e-LSD"
I drive an 03 gs 300 , would i be able to drift decently with it stock or would i need an lsd, if so what LSD do you guys recommend? Is it even worth it or would it be betetr to weld the diff?
Very old thread, and funny subject, but I'll bite. The GS is such a terrible platform for drifting. But if you want to, go ahead. Since you are looking into LSD's, they are definitely better than VSC/traction control. I put an OS Giken 1.5 way into my NA-T build. But you would need to substantially increase power before one would be necessary. The 2jz-ge through the stock auto trans is putting out under 200whp in a damn near 5,000lb car with you in it. You wouldn't even notice having it if you put one in. A 2 way LSD is ideal for drifting but not as good for street/daily driving. They are very necessary for the kind of control needed in drifting. But without a manual trans, you won't really ever have that control anyway. The car can be used for drift and it is really sweet when you see it. But it takes a major build of the entire car and a sacrifice of most everything that makes a Lexus a Lexus.
Hey TrueGS300, I'm about to install an OS Giken 1.5 way Super Loc LSD in my GS400. It's going into a used, low mileage LS430 rear diff, which I believe is the same as the 2GS rear diff.
I'm not sure if the LSD will mesh perfectly with the ring gear, so I ordered several sizes of pinion and ring gear shims, in case I need to adjust the gear mesh.
Anything else I should watch out for?
Also, the drivetrain is (and will remain) stock, and this is my daily driver. For what it cost me, this car is everything I wanted, except for the damn one-wheel peel!
In regard to the LSD, if I drive her like a polite commuter, and rarely drift or race her, how long should the clutch packs last?
