have someone step on the brake to see if the brake light lights up.

Yup... that's an indicator for a light being out in the back.

Isn't that the light that indicates that the traction control has been activated?

Was it raining? Mine does that if I am sliding in the snow/ice.

the traction control light is the one where it shows the car leaving a squiggly line per side. Kind of like signs posted to notify you the road up ahead will have bends.

Car with 2 curved lines = VSC kicked in. It should only blink and then go away once you stop sliding/peeling out

Car with 3 straight lines = Tail light bulb out. This stays on until you get the bulb replaced.

Slightly OT, but don't want to start a new thread:

Can you remove the high-mount light bulb without setting off that warning light? I hate that light turning on when i step on the brake as i have a spoiler with the 3rd brake light built into it. I don't like both lights turning on simultaneously.
