Anyway, I have the Sept '00 database (they release them to dealers around each December) and it cost me $275 I think for the update (outrageous, but what can you do?).

I've never had it freeze for 5-10 mins. The only glitch I've experienced is a couple of times I've hit a physical button right after starting the car (perhaps before the Lexus sign goes off the screen - I haven't tried to figure out the exact circumstances) and then none of the buttons work unless I restart the car.

Sept 00 is also the one I have. I wanna get an update, but heard that it's pretty expensive............ that sucks. All they do is get ur old harddrive, and give you someone else's with an update. In the future someone will get yours with the newer update. that sucks bigtime.
The first time the Nav system would just go blank and would not workafter sitting at idle for more than 10 minutes with all power options on. This was traced to a defective battery.
Second time the Nav would freeze when I hit the Previous Destination button. After disconnecting the battery for 30 mintues it was fine.
Third time it was the Nav Prev Dest again. This time the Battery trick did not fix it. It fixed itself after 1 week of entering destinations. Now it all works A ok.I have the 99 version. I need to update to the latest version one of these days,

Actually, when the car is first bought from the dealership, you get 2 free upgrades for your navigation system. This transfers to each owner so if you bought your GS second hand and the previous owner had never used the upgrade, you still have 2 that you can use for free. Simply have the dealership look up the past records on your car to see if any have been used. If you are currently utilizing a 97' database, that means that it has never been upgraded and the freebees are still around for you to use
I'm pretty sure this is a universal lexus thing but just in case you may want to check with your lexus dealership.

i've heard 98 owners get 3 updates free, 99 owners get 2, and 2000 owners get none at all. My sales told me, when I bought my car, that I get 1 (my car is 2000) and I go back they said it's not free. And my salesperson isn't there anymore.
