Default Performance Upgrades!!

Hey guys,
I have a 98 gs400. As far as performance, I only installed exhaust. Wondering what else is out there for my car that is a great upgrade for performance. Ive been looking into some intakes that include a reprogramed ecu. But other than that I don;t see anythign else. Any suggestions? If you can also give me the brand name and what type of product woudl be really helpful. Or maybe some where I can get it.

Thanks

-Kenji

TLW has most of the options laid out. Since you're in CA I'd start with the Torque Converter (TC)or the 3.76 diff. The SRT intake and ECU is not CARB legal, but I believe the K&N intake is (but doesn't have the ECU portion / less gains)

The torque converter will be the most noticeable.

What do you do about the speedometer when changing to the 3.76 Supra rear?

On another note, let's say you lived in an area where there is no emission testing. What would be the issues in removing EVERYTHING from the exhaust manifolds back and putting a true dual exhaust system on the car. (Retaining the oxygen sensors, of course) A few guys did this with their SHO's, but the exhaust sound was horrible. Just wondering.

Nothing. As far as I know it does not affect the speedometer - just the rpms.

I am pretty sure the same effect will be noticed on a GS if you do this. Horrible sound.

I plan to do something else and that is replacing the pipes after the cats (keeping the cats so that I can pass smog and emmissions tests) and replacing the Y-pipe with two X pipes. Will post results in a couple of weeks. From my research, the sound will be simply amazing!!!

Hard to figure that out. The speedometer is driven by the transmission. ?? (Not arguing, just trying to figure that out)

I was under the impression that the sound is a result of the engine design. When the SHO exhaust was modified, the sound was very raspy, sounded like one of those Hondas with the giant fart can mufflers on the back. A twin cam V8 SHOULD sound, well, like a V8.

see this is what i thought

but once you cut the wires and splice in the piggyback

you have to leave it like that until you put it back to stock

disconnect the box and you leave an open circuit to the MAF (mass air flow)sensor

and the car runs in safe mode

the downside to the TC is the $$$ brand new TC's will cost from $700-900 and then the install
not too mention the tranny cooler but thats only like $30-50

good luck and if you have any questions you cant find thru search PM me ill try to help ya

Is there a way the speedo can be changed? If you change the gear ratio to the 3.76, then the speedo will be off unless you run a larger diameter wheel and tire combo. If you run a larger wheel, then the gain of going to a more aggresive gear will be offset due to the larger diameter of the wheels.

umm..... just clarification..... going to 3.76 gear ratio will NOT affect your speedo. only your engine rpm will be higher than normal.....

putting on 20s (or 19s fat) setup will throw the speedo off, that's what i haev right now. but it's ok, it's only couple of mph even when it says 80mph, not like it's 20mph off.
