Got my estimate back today, $4500. I was wayyyyy off. They are repairing, not replacing the (bottom) tailgate which I don't like at all. This is the Lexus place. I know the truck will come back flawless but I feel like it will always have a crappy, weak tailgate and would affect resale value. I'm going to address this with them Monday and/or go to other high end places bc my insurance will pay whomever.

Can't say for sure, but you might (?) be better off having the liftgate repaired rather than replaced. If they replace it, it will have to be re-hung/re-mounted, and if they don't get the alignment and seal correct, it could mean possible water leaks and wind-noise.

Not replacing the bottom tailgate is not good. Ugh.

Yeah I'm gonna "fight" it, or try. I'm having a few more estimates done at the best places in town next week. Though this Toyota Collision Center has a sterling reputation.

That's great to hear the price is good, I don't see an issue with just fixing the panel. If it stays on car then it should remain perfectly adjusted
Dang ATJ that's sounds like expensive fix.
I hope your insurance will cover it.
Since we are confessing, oh yeah I messed up.
Last year I backed into a lumber cart at Lowes Hardware and put a very ugly dent in my lift gate and I don't think it's the kind of dent that will pop out.
It's too embarassing to post a pic but I might anyway.
It's nowhere near as bad as the damage on your GX.
Thanks for the sentiments. Here is the pole my 570 got into a fight with:
I’m fairly impressed. These things are very hard to bend. I’ve seen cars run into these and the poles didn’t move a millimeter lol.
Oh wow, that's embarassing. haha
Painted bright Yellow and next to a handicap spot.
If you had hit it square on with your Reese hitch that pole would be history or at the least be bent like a bananna and maybe just a little whip lash for you.
Now I don't feel so bad about backing into a lumber cart.
It was MY lumber to make me feel more stupid, since I rolled it way up out of the way and it must have rolled back as I was backing out and by the time I saw it in my back up camera I already hear the thunk sound of a lovely beautiful dent. lol
It didn't take off any paint and I didn't hit it too hard so it's not an eyesore, just an annoying reminder every time I look at it.
I would prob have to replace the lift gate from a donor car to make it go away and be cheaper than the body work but I don't know.
A few things caught my attention during my m/c tour thru CA, NV, OR, ID, MT and WA. Jeeps, new model Broncos and the trailers out numbered the RVs by a lot. There were plenty of RVs, some pulling cars behind but there were far more pickups pulling trailers (caravans) for you Brits, A bunch of us watched a trailer wagging the pickup pulling it heading downhill in the rain in Oregon. Everyone behind it slowed to ‘watch the show’ as I’m sure everyone figured the trailer would flip the truck but it took a couple miles before the truck slowed enough so the trailer stopped wagging. It had tandem wheels but wasn’t a fifth wheel setup. I suppose the driver was simply going too fast. Lucky driver. Jeeps were everywhere, new model four doors and pickups. Lots of new Broncos too, enough to catch my attention. Overall I think Camrys outnumbered any other brand/model though.
I went to the best place in town after deciding against Lexus because I don’t want a repaired tailgate.
The first thing he said was “I’m replacing that tailgate, they are insane to want to repair and NOT replace. Look how the whole panel curves. No way that wouldn’t be a replacement.” He pointed out weatherstripping that got damaged…he was 1000000% more thorough. He thinks there might be damage behind the bumper cover that he’s going to check,‘not frame damage. His estimate came in at $3800 (vs $4500 at Lexus Collision) but it will end up being a lot more. First week of November! Look at that tailgate and tell me you wouldn’t want a replacement…
