Great to see a classic Toyota! Before that era my father had a camper that sat on top of a Toyota pickup, I remember we drove to the World Fair in Spokane, WA in 1974. The only thing I remember about that trip was the camper, seeing snow, and me and my brother getting sick. Everything else is a blank...

By 1977 my parents for some odd reason got into VW's. Every one of them had all kinds of issues, but my parents loved them!

This popped up on my YouTube today. Interesting how crazy old this is yet the robot tech seems really state of the art. Also fun to watch them hell test it, was a bit surprised to see GM being so fastidious. I am a fan of these cars, at least once they got the 4.5... It's the Twins Caddy before they updated it for 1988 with said 4.5 and styling tweaks.


If you notice in this below clip, I know it's not a universally praised car but I like it, whitewall tires and wire wheel covers and all. The Caddy emblem looks good on the C-Pillar. I can't get my GM hating friend to even admit that it looks comfortable and nice inside (for then, in 1988). I also loved that Caddy steering wheel design before airbags. LOL "What do ya know, beginners luck!!"

 

No kidding... I was wondering what it's like now...Same route every morning. Comfort Mixed. Usually 24-25. Must be the light traffic this morning. Still this is crazy consider its size. I do not miss my GX at all. Lol

 

Something I've noticed is an engine has to be running in tip top shape to get max mpgs.
All sensors working perfectly, fuel injectors flow matching, perfect compression, etc.

But, even with that, in city traffic in S. Flroida where I'm idling as much as I drive between traffic lights my info display hoovers around 14.5 mpg. lol

 

Thats not bad at all actually for that usage

Most people report better mpgs so I always thought it sounded low but I spend half my time idling at traffic lights. lol

Car has almost 160k and my fuel trims are almost perfect and compression is good, maybe a tiny bit low on just one cylinder but within spec last time I checked.

When I lived in Los Angeles I couldn't break 10MPG with my LS430, all the traffic. And it's relatively efficient for a V8, about 17.5MPG regularly city.

It was bad.

 

Oh man, that's horrible.
When I lived out in the country I got better mileage driving back roads with no traffic lights but drove a lot further to get anywhere.
Even at 14 mpg for city driving, I'm usually doing less than 8-10 miles round trip vs 50 miles in the country. lol

 

That type of driving is where you really see the penalty for engine size.

 

Well, my IS350 averaged 19 mpg, my 2013 Sienna averages around 22 mpg, my daughters 2006 Camry SE averages 23 mpg. The car with the best MPG's I owned was a 2018 Civic Si...it had a 1.5L turbo 205 hp (237 with a tune) and averaged 30 mpg. On long highway trips I could get almost 40 mpg's....but the way I drove it most of the time I was averaging around 26 mpg
