All I can see is that the sales of Model S declined around the time the Model 3 began sales. Makes sense to me that some sales went to the cheaper model.
Totally, but they have to give people a compelling reason to choose the Model S over the 3.
I have a feeling that the yoke steering was something Elon Musk insisted on just to be different, it looks totally stupid and offers less functionality than a traditional steering wheel.

They haven't, up until the introduction of the new interior. I assume this will go to all Model S's and not just the Plaid Model? I can't see how they could afford to split the production line given their thin margins.
I see your points and understand that a lot of removing stuff like stalks contribute to cost cutting. I just think in this instance, it was a design decision as the new Yoke steering wheel was done as a design aesthetic at the decision of Elon.
It has everything to do with cost cutting..but its good cost cutting because they have made the design more attractive. Some of it reasonable
Other cost cutting they have done:
-moved the hazard light button to the same PRNDL touch button
-Tesla S also no longer has adjustable shoulder belts ( a little insulting for such an expensive car)
-the headrests are cheaper design as well

The capacitive buttons that are on the bottom of the wireless charger that is now the gear selector is more expensive than the stalk. How is that cost cutting? In this instance, lets agree to disagree as its purely a design aesthetic in this case because capacitive buttons are more expensive than stalks.

The moment you remove complexity as well as parts…it’s saves money. So, Tesla has removed two different stalks and moved the parking controls as well as the emergency flasher button into one integrated part that (I think) also includes the cell phone charging. One part now now serves more functions. Less parts means less shipping. Easier installation. I bet the glove box button has been rerouted to become software.
The signals have now been rerouted to the steering wheel. The part is now integrated into one unit.
The design part is a different story. It’s the trade off of reducing the parts and in this case I think it looks great.
all the manufacturers do this. Toyota for example is now clustering buttons and switches into into one part unit. In many cases it looks cheap and unsightly…but in the Tesla case for the buttons it looks good and design wise it’s attractive. But the deletion of the adjustable seat belt anchors is disappointing

removing adjustable lumbar support is definitely cost cutting! i don't know if that was done on this S too.
Tesla also removed the lighted red door lights. They now just have a red reflector but deleted completely from the rear doors. But added other stuff to the doors.
