I agree with you...I believe hand-crafting sets Lexus apart, much like the early ads slammed home.

I would be very amused if it were revealed that Toyota Motor decided once and for all to trounce the competition at everything under some secretive project that began in 2010....they probably could do anything they want and it depends on profit and cost, they can't throw everything to the wind....I don't think anybody has a problem with the Lexus name, it has that prestigious aspect already....so now step up the capabilities of the vehicles, and somehow don't increase the price, now even more value, or, try charging for it and see if it can be done, turn the Lexus name into a BMW or Apple...just build equal products in performance....I always like the fact that a 2006 LS430 has a .26 cd, that is not by accident, and pretty impressive...(and I wonder if mine went up because a plastic piece in front of the right front wheel is missing)

Why build another BMW or Mercedes-Benz or Audi? Why not make Lexus something different, a viable alternative for those who DO NOT want another BMW or Mercedes-Benz or Audi?

BMW and Mercedes-Benz and Audi are not successful because they are copies and clones of each other; they are successful because they are different from the other, offering the shopper something different. Choice is good. If one luxury brand does not offer what you like or want, there is another waiting for your patronage and your money.

imho Lexus lacks performance. I don't think that adding performance means copying. In the other categories, Toyota didn't settle for almost, they said as good as. But not in overall performance, that was never a goal (aerodynamics, top speed, fuel economy, wind noise). But just using that 30,000 ft view method, look at a Lexus service lounge on a busy day, then look at BMW. First of all, there's an age difference, secondly, the latter is virtually empty anyway, because they provide loaners). They are 180 degrees apart. One car needs to be seen every 5,000 miles (really in 2017?), the other has free maintenance, so the schedule is reasonable). I don't think that reliability and performance are mutually exclusive. Today, maybe, who knows if tomorrow that changes...

That has been disproved. The new GS will be based on the GA-L platform, same as LC and LS and is a 2019 model so probably will come out late 2018.

I wasn't actually taking sides...just posting on what some of the rumors were. It also begs the question of whether we'll see the new 2019 GS in the American market. One of the problems with the GS market is that both SUV sales and those of its own brother ES are far outpacing it.

If anything, Lexus employs more hand crafting and artisan techniques today than they used to. They still use hand rubbed paint on the LS.

Agreed...a true performance car for the "everyman." 0-60 in 3 seconds, quarter in 12, and LEXUS quality and luxury on top of it all!!!

Why does the Everyman need a car that does 0-60 in 3 seconds lol

Here's an example of what the OP is talking about. Could you imagine if this debuted with a 3.0L twin turbo V6 in 2014 or 15 instead of the dumbed down crappy selling RC?

A Panamera Turbo S can do all that easily. Problem solved

It's not even limited to cars any more. Now, you've got SUVs like the Grand Cherokee SRT-8 running sub-5-second 0-60 times.

i'm wondering, how will anyone clean that textured cut glass and pleated fabric?

The cut glass is cut on the back side, so the surface you touch is smooth. Just clean it with glass cleaner.

The pleated fabric, if you throw up on it or something it would be an issue but day today it's not going to get dirty in that area. My LS400 and LS430 had gathered leather in that area, I never felt the need to clean it.
