Lexus New Products are Lacking
We kinda got into this on the 3rd gen forum, that the steering wheel finish cracks. I said it doesn't bother me, and it lets you know somehow that it's real, as opposed to a true plastic one...and I guess nobody agreed. I used an example that if you were looking for a vintage guitar, its finish would not be perfect, but again no agreement. Hard to put my finger on it, but people want things to be perfect, and not have a hint of human production is my hunch.....
I would be very amused if it were revealed that Toyota Motor decided once and for all to trounce the competition at everything under some secretive project that began in 2010....they probably could do anything they want and it depends on profit and cost, they can't throw everything to the wind....I don't think anybody has a problem with the Lexus name, it has that prestigious aspect already....so now step up the capabilities of the vehicles, and somehow don't increase the price, now even more value, or, try charging for it and see if it can be done, turn the Lexus name into a BMW or Apple...just build equal products in performance....I always like the fact that a 2006 LS430 has a .26 cd, that is not by accident, and pretty impressive...(and I wonder if mine went up because a plastic piece in front of the right front wheel is missing)

BMW and Mercedes-Benz and Audi are not successful because they are copies and clones of each other; they are successful because they are different from the other, offering the shopper something different. Choice is good. If one luxury brand does not offer what you like or want, there is another waiting for your patronage and your money.
Why build another BMW or Mercedes-Benz or Audi? Why not make Lexus something different, a viable alternative for those who DO NOT want another BMW or Mercedes-Benz or Audi?

Though Lexus is still mum about it, right now, there doesn't seem to be any guarantee that there will be a next-generation Lexus GS at all.

I wasn't actually taking sides...just posting on what some of the rumors were. It also begs the question of whether we'll see the new 2019 GS in the American market. One of the problems with the GS market is that both SUV sales and those of its own brother ES are far outpacing it.
To me, the artisan and hand-crafting techniques helped to make Lexus unique; from the early days when the paint jobs were hand-rubbed to remove orange peel, to today's cut-glass door panels with beautiful pleated/creased fabric. Although largely produced by robots, the human artwork and hand-crafting appeal to me. The layered steering wheels, piano-wood consoles, and newly pleated door panels with cut glass make a LEXUS, a LEXUS.
Agreed...a true performance car for the "everyman." 0-60 in 3 seconds, quarter in 12, and LEXUS quality and luxury on top of it all!!!
imho Lexus lacks performance. I don't think that adding performance means copying. In the other categories, Toyota didn't settle for almost, they said as good as. But not in overall performance, that was never a goal (aerodynamics, top speed, fuel economy, wind noise). But just using that 30,000 ft view method, look at a Lexus service lounge on a busy day, then look at BMW. First of all, there's an age difference, secondly, the latter is virtually empty anyway, because they provide loaners). They are 180 degrees apart. One car needs to be seen every 5,000 miles (really in 2017?), the other has free maintenance, so the schedule is reasonable). I don't think that reliability and performance are mutually exclusive. Today, maybe, who knows if tomorrow that changes...

2019 model i believe, so probably mid-late next year.
The cut glass is cut on the back side, so the surface you touch is smooth. Just clean it with glass cleaner.
The pleated fabric, if you throw up on it or something it would be an issue but day today it's not going to get dirty in that area. My LS400 and LS430 had gathered leather in that area, I never felt the need to clean it.
