Highlander continues its strong demand!

Toyota Motor Corp. said today it will spend $100 million to increase production of the Highlander crossover in Princeton, Ind.

The Highlander has been bumping against its production ceiling at the Indiana assembly plant.

The investment, which will also require Toyota to add 300 workers to Princeton’s existing workforce of about 4,500, will give Toyota 30,000 more Highlanders annually.

Sales of the U.S.-built Highlander are up 18 percent for the first seven months of this year to 81,374. That excludes a small and declining volume of Highlanders (2,121 units this year) that are still being imported from Japan.

The U.S. production boost will not increase the overall production capacity of the Indiana assembly plant, which is 365,000 vehicles a year. Instead, the project will expand Highlander to both of the plant’s two assembly lines.

Currently, Highlanders and Sequoia SUVs are assembled on one assembly line, and the Sienna minivan is built on a second line.

“Expanding the Highlander to both lines will give us more flexibility in producing it, and also more capacity for it,” Toyota spokesman Mike Goss said today. “Highlander demand is strong and we need it.”

Princeton was originally Toyota’s key truck plant, producing SUVs, minivans and the full-size Tundra pickup.

After the crash in truck and SUV sales in 2008, Toyota reorganized its truck production, and consolidated all Tundra output at its plant in San Antonio.

Toyota has been reassigning Princeton’s large capacity since then. The automaker has separately added about 200 workers so far this year.

not necessarily, the current CX-9 is based on the V6 shared with Ford. as of now Mazda has no in-house V6 developed for the US market. their Skyactive 4 bangers are very nice, it'll be interesting to see what the new V6 they plan to put in CX-9.

'Consumer Reports' hails Toyota Highlander as top SUV

USA Today Link

Consumer Reports says Toyota Highlander is the best midsize SUV, citing its impressive gas mileage and towing capacity.

The redesigned Highlander averaged 25 miles per gallon overall in its hybrid version, yet could tow up to 3,500 pounds. With the regular V-6 engine, it got about 20 mpg.

The magazine also said Highlander has better handling, a steadier ride and reduced body lean in corners. The infotainment system was simple to use with good voice controls.

Highlander was up against some solid competition.

Consumer Reports judged the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe SUVs, as well as the Ford C-Max Hybrid all to be "very good" in its testing. The result are published in the October issue.

My wife just purchased a 2014 Highlander platinum a Lil over a month ago, and is really enjoying it thus far. It was either the Toyota Highlander or the Lincoln MKC after she narrowed it down to 2 vehicles.

Out of curiosity, what was the deciding factor that eliminated the MKC?

call me old fashion. if it's my own money and it's not a lease, i will not touch anything American, Korean or German. for non-luxury brand i'd stick with Honda, Toyota, for lux brand i'd stick with Lexus.

You're old fashioned

Soldier76's wife may have considered the badge but there is also V6 vs I4, size, comfort, real world driving, cost and many more variables. It's far more common to start seeing equilibrium among auto manufacturers these days than even a few years ago, though none are perfect. To Lexus's credit they are blazing a trail in 1st place with 68 problems per 100 vehicles vs 2nd best MBZ with 104 ppv and everyone following. Can't wait to see 2015 JD Power results.
