2014 Toyota Highlander thread
2014 all the way... more tech, more space...
Really surprised that so many are recommending the Highlander. There are definitely many things in its favor. For example, I believe the new generation has added some features like a very nicely tuned electric steering and double wishbone suspension in the rear. The sound insulation is also very much improved.
I have driven both and honestly, I think the Highlander NVH, acceleration, handling, comfort, etc are better than the RX350. I'm not sure if I am hallucinating on that though, since I have only test driven once and it was not even back to back. At the same time though, there's no doubt the RX350 is also very very nice.
I'm also concerned about depreciation. A three year old Lexus has already gone through the steepest portion of its depreciation curve, whereas a brand new Highlander will depreciate very quickly for the first several years after you drive it off the lot.

Agreed--assuming that the price is about the same, I'd go with the new Highlander absolutely. For me, the 3rd row is a must though, so I'm biased.
Unless you are coming out of a Lexus or other high end brand, the Highlander Limited is going to make you feel like you are driving one, IMO. So, if you can get brand a brand new Highlander for the price of a 2-3 year old Lexus, I'd get the Highlander. Unless you absolutely need features like vented seats (which aren't great, IMO), auto highbeams (if the Lex has that--and I think you can even get this in the '14 Highlander), and other true lux features. And again, if you aren't coming from a lux vehicle, you probably don't feel you need these.
Actually I looked into it and found that even a 3 year old Lexus Rx depreciates quite a bit. The new-3 years depreciation of a new Highlander is actually less than the 3 year-3 more years depreciation of a Rx.

The Highlander would be more functional.
Personally, I like the RX over the Highlander. But this is coming from a single guy with no kids nor need to haul lots of people nor cargo. If you need functionality, go for the Highlander.
