Well BMW used to love using high rev engines (previous M5/M6 V10, current M3 V8, previous M3 I6) so it's not all about low end grunt.
They used to, in their hey-day. The last M5 used a V10. The current M5 uses a twin turbo V8 with torque about equal to the horses, available at low rpms.
I thought the V10 was best but what do I know. Maybe guys like turbo lag.

both the e60 v10 and the e9x v8 are very high revving engines. bmw m cars have always have high rev engines until the x5/6m and now the f10 m5
