I've often wondered where does BMW go from here? Do they increase displacement on the next gen inline 6? It's really hard to improve on such a great engine.
I would buy the X5 with B58.
they were doing 0.9% financing when i got mine late last year.
Current gen production is about to end so I would hurry if you want custom order.
Looking up the current X5, it starts at 70k in base form. I've had the base X5 as a loaner, and it's as numb and boring to drive as it gets. Might as well go for the V8, which also comes with many more standard options, but starts at 90k and long term will require a ton of maintenance.
Not looking to spend this type of money. I mostly only drive during rain/snow or when I carrying the bikes to trail/track, otherwise I am riding my bikes everywhere. I really like the Overtrail GX550, but the Durango seems to be the more sensible choice.

BMW stopped accepting G05 orders about a month ago. Standard production wraps up in June, with a final series of "Legacy Edition" models being built in July, exclusively for the Romanian market.

If you option it properly - the 40i is great.
I test drove both and while the V8 is better for sure - this car is not for spirited driving and since I got it, i have not put it in Sport Mode yet. The Comfort mode is that good and the engine power is amazing and smooth. I also tested the V8 but the long term reliability and additional cost was not worth it as the inline 6 is what BMW does best.
If you drive one equipped with Msport suspension and Msport brakes with the staggered tires, it’s definitely not boring to drive at all.
The base versions are much worse.

Oh wow - i haven’t checked the X5 forums in a bit.
I figured it was close.
Hoping the new X5 is not a total disaster like new X3.

By the time you add all the options, the price will creep up very close to the V8 that has these options standard. They are nice cars, just not really worth 90k.

Based on info in BMW forums from insiders, the inline 6 will continue with updates. They have been refining the formula since 2007 when original N54 turbo inline 6 came out. I think it’s still the best by far for daily driving duties in terms of power, smoothness and efficiency.
I wish they would have made NA version for a special M model that revs to 9k to compete with GT3 but i think that is no longer possible with new EU regs.

They make a special M model that is NA and revs to 14k.

I know. I don't remember exactly how much my 2012 50i was, but it was fully loaded for I think under 70, and after discounts we got it for 60ish? I do remember we started with a 35i, and by the time we added options we wanted, it was basically the same price as the 50i with most of these standard.
One of the reasons we've twice gone with X6M for my wife is because the M models already come fully loaded with every premium upgrade, you just selected you color customizations.

70K in 2012 dollars translates to 99K today, thanks to 42% inflation. If you bought the 2012 in in 2011 it's over 101K and 45% inflation.
Really the only big flaw with the B58 is the usual cooling system stuff. Budget for it and just be ready to replace your oil filter housing & gaskets around 90k, maybe some hoses and the heat management module and you'll be fine.
Oh and with an email and a pipe you can make outrageous power.
How are they in general, reliability wise? I figure long tern any NA engine should be much more repairable if it comes to it.
They are very very good, you may have lifter issues but very unlikely if you are the one who owns it from new.
Use XX-30 oil and change at 5k is basically all you need to do, any work needed will only be needed well past 100k miles. Make sure you drive it hard when you first buy it to promote the best possible ring seating
