45k dockworker's about to strike
i guess you think there should be no automation in auto production or other industries too?

Even Rolls Royce uses some automation in the production of their bespoke automobiles. Your $600k Phantom? Painted by a robot, because it does a better and more consistent job than even the most talented artisan.

they don't. they may be hand assembled with extra human checks for precision of measurement and fit, but that's it.
a cylinder head is not 'hand made'.

Yes, nearly all Mercedes-AMG engines are hand-built by a single Master Engine Builder in a special facility in Affalterbach, Germany:
- Philosophy: Mercedes-AMG's "One Man, One Engine" philosophy is central to the brand.
- Process: Each engine is hand-assembled from start to finish, and the builder signs a hand-engraved plaque on the engine as a mark of quality.
You can like the concept for certain components of niche products without it being a good idea across every aspect of an entire industry. Fully hand-built Corollas would cost well over $60k, between the drastically higher production costs and the dramatically smaller volume constraining supply. Your 4Runner would easily top $100k. People who are not millionaires need cars too.
I am amazed at the disgust towards workers in this thread.
you say greedy corporations, i say greedy and unrealistic union workers. as you say, there will have to be a compromise, but the union believes it's in a strong position especially with an election and (current) white house support.
it could well cause a nice recession later this year, not to mention massive shortages and thousands of containers stuck off shore.

Blanket no automation is ludicrous. How about just adapting to automation like every other industry? I am very pro union but that one demand is something that gives unions a bad reputation to the public at large. I agree in general with the other demands that they have though.
so i believe they're asking for 77% raise over 7 years, so 11% a year. maybe the company should agree to it as their actions could make inflation go higher than that. that would be ironic.

I've been thinking about this thread and changed my mind. Lol
I don't know how many man hours are involved per container but if it's only 1 man hour, I say pay them.
A container holds a lot of goods so slap a hundred dollar bill on it and give it.
These people spend their money in the local economy, I hope. Lol

10% per year (1.10^6=1.77), but agreed. I can't think of any other industry in which a guaranteed raise of 10% per year, every year, for every employee is in any way reasonable.

One must also remember that much of what we eat and drink (if it comes from overseas), wear, buy in stores, drive, and generally depend on for much of our day-to-day life is made possible by those workers who load and unload the ships....along, of course, with truck/train-operators, farmers/ranchers, and many others.
