Lexus GX Hybrid Rumored to Debut This Month

A Lexus GX hybrid is rumored to debut in March, but fans of the SUV may not be too thrilled to learn what sort of powertrain it could use.

Lexus was churning out hybrids long before such a powertrain became the fashionable choice among both automakers and consumers, and Toyota’s luxury arm continues to expand its offerings in that department, too. The most recent is the first-ever hybrid version of the LX – the LX700h – but it most certainly won’t be the last. In fact, a new report indicates that a Lexus GX hybrid isn’t only in the works, but rather, it’s expected to make its debut this month, too.

That rumor comes to us from TopSpeed, and it arrives on the heels of an announcement from the recent Lexus Canada 35th anniversary event in Charlevoix, Quebec, where the brand revealed that a new product was indeed set to be unveiled in March. Of course, that new product could be one of any number of new things – perhaps even the much-anticipated Lexus LFR – but it’s also reasonable to expect that a Lexus GX hybrid could be the latest addition to the brand’s lineup.

A Lexus GX hybrid seems inevitable at this point after the totally redesigned version of the SUV debuted for the 2024 model year packing only one powertrain option – a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6. That tidbit came as a bit of a surprise given the fact that the Toyota Land Cruiser – which shares much in common with the GX – utilizes a hybrid powertrain with electric power assisting a turbocharged 2.4-liter I-4 gas engine.

Thus, one could make an assumption that the Lexus GX hybrid will feature the same powertrain as the Land Cruiser, just like the LX700h is equipped with the V6 hybrid setup present in the Toyota Sequoia. In the Land Cruiser, that powertrain churns out 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque, which are big numbers, but haven’t really translated to real world performance.

Many have complained that this powertrain leaves a lot to be desired in terms of acceleration, so perhaps the GX hybrid will get a bit of a boost worthy of its more premium positioning in the grand scheme of things. Even if that isn’t the case, it seems as if it’s only a matter of time before a Lexus GX hybrid joins the lineup, though whether or not it happens this month or later on down the road remains to be seen.
