Lexus GX 460 Gets Minor Facelift, Driver Assist Tech

Updating the Outdated

With a new decade just around the bend, automakers are taking to the classic "new year, new me" in the form of new models, resurrected nameplates, and minor refreshes.  Lexus is no exception.  Recently, the luxury automaker unveiled a fresh look and new tech for its 2020 GX 460.  Sharing underpinnings with its overseas counterpart Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and domestic Toyota 4Runner, GX became Lexus' third SUV in the automakers lineup.  Featuring a body-on-frame construction, V8 motor, four-wheel drive, and a luxury-boosted interior, the GX 460 maintains these elements as it enters its 17th year on the market.  Check out what Lexus has in store for this long-standing SUV.

Sharper Image

The GX 460 gains Lexus' signature spindle grill, replacing its bland-looking straight bar grill and aligning GX styling with the rest of the Lexus lineup.  The tighter grille gives the triple-beam LED headlights a sharper image and the front-end an overall aggressive look.

Lexus Safety System+

With the new look comes new tech for the 2020 GX.  Lexus Safety System+ will come standard across the the entire range.  Yes, including the base version.  Safety System+ includes things like lane departure alert, pre-collision system with pedestrian protection, radar cruise control, and automatic high beams.

Optional Off-roader

We know the average buyer of a GX probably won't be taking it off-road.  IF a buyer wants to be able to say their lux-ute can go off the beaten path, however, a new optional Off-Road Package will be made available for 2020.  Multi-Terrain Monitor and Panoramic View Monitors located around the vehicle will show the driver views from the front, behind, sides, and even underneath the GX through the vehicle's infotainment screen on the center console.  The Off-Road package also adds Multi-Terrain Select technology.  This system prevents wheelspin by adjusting the response of the throttle and brake pedal.  Available settings for Multi-Terrain Select will include loose rocks, sand, and rocks.

Color Palette

Lexus states "elegance is standard" on the 2020 GX 460.  New for 2020, Premium and Luxury grades are equipped with an elegant Gray Sapele wood with aluminum trim.  The GX comes in seven vibrant exterior colors: Starfire Pearl, Atomic Silver, Nebula Gray Pearl, Nightfall Mica, Fire Agate Pearl, Black Onyx and Claret Mica. The GX interior is available in the following four colors: Black, Sepia, Ecru, and all-new Rioja Red with black headliner.  The semi-aniline leather is dyed completely through, unlike most leathers with conventional surface dyes.

Dinosaurs are Cool

Mechanically, the rest of the Lexus GX 460 more or less remains unchanged for 2020.  The standard engine remains the 4.6-liter V8 shoveling out 301-horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque.  Other carryovers include the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS), Downhill Assist Control (DAC), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and available Crawl Control, and Lexus Enform Safety Connect.  No pricing is available yet, but the 2019 Lexus GX is available starting at $52,505.  While a redesigned GX 460 isn't on the horizon just yet, this dinosaur is still kicking after all these years, and will be for a little longer.
