What's In a Name? The Lexus Naming Strategy (photos)

We all know exactly what each Lexus looks like when we hear their name, but most of us never thought about the actual meaning behind the letters and the numbers.

1. Lexus IS

The small Lexus IS sedan is both sporty and luxurious, and best of all, it is one of the most affordable cars with the Lexus name on it. IS comes from "Intelligent Sports," which is due to its advanced technology, as well as its sporty feel and performance. The number that comes after the two letters represents the engine size, for instance, Lexus IS 300 would be equipped with a 2.0-liter engine, and a Lexus IS 250 would have a 2.5-liter engine in it. The same number strategy usually applies for the rest of the brand too.

2. Lexus GS

If you want to take it a step further, you can trade-up your IS for a Lexus GS. The GS stands for "Grand Sedan," and even though it is not the biggest sedan in the Lexus lineup, the Grand represents its elegance, luxury, and comfort level. However, if you are thinking just about size, there are Lexus models grander than the GS.

3. Lexus ES

The Lexus ES is quite popular as a company car, thanks to its spacious interior, reliability, and luxurious feel. The ES stands for "Executive Sedan," which is self-explanatory, especially when you're looking at it. The mid-size sedan is considered a great value for the price, but is in no way cheap, though it is one of the more affordable cars in the Lexus lineup.

4. Lexus LS

If you want status, the Lexus LS is as prestigious as it gets, and can compete along side the best in the automotive industry. Though every Lexus is a luxury car, the LS actually stands for "Luxury Sedan," and the plain and simple name says it all. This is as luxurious as you can get in the Lexus lineup, and it has been for the past 25 years.

5. Lexus RX

The Lexus RX is the first ever utility vehicle offered by Lexus, and the SUV is as popular as ever, selling more than any other Lexus model in 2016. The RX stands for "Radiant Crossover," and many claim Lexus used the word Radiant to represent the bright and shinning future that they see for the extremely popular SUV. As for the X, Lexus used it either as in "crossover," or as in "4x4."

6. Lexus NX

The Lexus NX is the newest member of the lineup, and it happens to be the little sister of the RX, introduced as a smaller crossover vehicle. As we've mentioned in the past slide, the X represents the crossover, which is why it's only found on SUV/crossover models, and the N stands for Nimble. The Nimble Crossover speaks for itself, thanks to its small and sporty, yet capable, structure.

7. Lexus RC

The Lexus RC are designed as coupe versions of the IS', only sportier in all aspects. The RC stands for "Racing Coupe," thanks to its aggressive, sporty look, as well as its actual performance. Under the hood Lexus backs that up by developing as much as 306-horsepower, as well as modifications that makes it a true Racing Coupe.
