Hello everyone, newbie here.
i have a 2001 LS 430 with a VSC check light. What is this and can I drive with this situation? Any approximate cost to fix? Tnx.
If only VSC light, then you can drive, just a safety system is disabled, and ABS too. Often, however, this tie to a general check engine light. They also set the VSC, and cruise may be disabled (at least adaptive cruise ib the CL/UL packages).
If it does not go away in a day or two with a few start/stop cycles (sometimes after heay rain mine goes on), get it checked/fixed. As per above, mght no have anythiong to do wih VSC depeding on what else is lit up.
Forgive me if you know this, but your original post asked, so VSC is Vehicle Stability Control, it's Lexus' trademarked traction control system. It can be manually over-ridden with a button on your lower center console which makes the light come on, but then when you start the car again, it will always default to being on, and hence no light, so if your light is staying on, then refer to the comments above.
Should I buy or rent a code reader? What is best kind? Thanks for help.
Visit a local Autozone or Advance Auto etc. they can pull the code.
They will try to sell you parts based on any codes they discover. Report back here before buying anything from them.

Sorry, I didn't understand about that manual turn-off thing. Can you please elaborate? You can turn off traction control I think (never have tried) but not any light.
Check your owners manual. I don't think it is possible to manually turn off VSC - but traction control can be turned off with a button above the shifter. The two things VSC and Traction Control are not the same thing.
Interesting. This is why you hang out on this forum...education. They are technically NOT the same thing, but they are very closely related. If you peel around a corner in the rain, the car will slip a bit, and there will be beeping and the slip alert signal (the little car with wavy lines behind it) on the dash will come on, indicating the car has lost and is regaining stability. If you push the "TRAC OFF" button on your lower center console, you will fishtail around the corner. There are times in mud or snow where spinning will get you out of trouble, so you push "TRAC OFF" to allow the wheels to spin, but this is not technically VSC. If you want to have fun in a parking lot in the snow, push "TRAC OFF", hit the gas and turn the wheel. Fun will be had. For most conditions though, the default setting of traction control on and VSC work. There is no button to turn VSC off, though according to the below link, they share the same button:

There is also a thread below titled "How to reset the VSC light". I'm iffy on the 'just reset it' solution. Yes, computers can malfunction, but generally if the car turned the light on, there is a reason. I do ignore TPS sensors though, altitude and temperature can set those off, so I do reset that.

The vsc light is caused by a issue detected by the ecu it puts the car in a limp mode reduced power/gas mileage to help protect the car from the issue. You can permantly disable the VSC by unplugging an abs sensor but this will cause permant lights on the dash. You can get a super cheap scan tool from amazon for $15.
You need to figure what is makimg the car throw a code.

@alextv , that is super interesting, so maybe that was another 04-06 change. I can't recall what my 03 said but my 04 has the "TRAC OFF" button. Lends to the theory that they are closely related and do share the override button.
