why don’t you want to install it per the video instructions?
i was very happy when a CL user shared it with us.
It was easy and complete, it includes TechStream, you just need a cable.
i still have my old xp machine but prefer to use my 64bit Win10 machine with the XP TechStream virtual drive.

I dont know. Maybe I just feel burned by Chinese knockoffs. I have purchased TS on two separate occasions. And on two separate occasions I didn't get what I ordered. I have a cable. And I've thrown away a cable. I have the SW that came with it. But the SW was a newer version than I ordered and didn't work. The chipset inside the cable may or may not work with this version but not that version etc. So I bought the iCarSoft i905 Scanner and have been very happy with it.

I have been working with computers since they were dropped on our desk in 1988. And they can't leave well enough alone. Always new wizbang this or that program of which very few are actually something you really want. Then "NEW" SW comes out or new operating system etc. Obsoletes the old. It's just always been more of a pain than its worth. The ONLY reason I am thinking about trying again is because I want to add the GS400 to my garage. Only manufactured three years. The SC430 is everywhere. I can find garage queens or beaters. Very few GS400's unless I want Black Interior. Yada yada. I'll find one. And I wanted to learn TS because of all of its features.

OK Gman, since I have never gotten TS to work before and the subject came up again yesterday, how did you determine which chipset version is in each cable as you obviously have at least two different ones? Thank You.

The firmware version is in the description of the item. All the ones I looked at tell you what firmware version is on the cable. sometimes you have to go past the initial description.

I would like to know how many versions of the cable there are and what version of S/W goes with that version. Seems simple enough. But it's not.
Version 17 S/W seems to be shipping with a cable listed as version 1.4.8. GmanSC is using one that he describes as 2.0.

The firmware version refers to the cable only. It is either version 1 or 2. (with some dots afterward) It appears that version one works with 02-05 cars and version two works with 06 forward. I can tell you that initially, I purchased a version one cable not knowing the difference. It did not work with my 06. I then purchased a version two cable and it worked right away. I do not know if this is universal. The version of the Techstream is not normally an issue. I have been using version 12 for years on my 06 and it works fine. I suspect other versions of Techstream would work also. You will not find a table that lists Techstream version because I don't think it is an issue. Many people use different version of Techstream without any issues. Generally it is the firmware version of the cable that makes the difference.

Paul,

When I bought my first TechStream cable/ software in 2016, It was Ver 1.41 firmware cable with Ver 10 software ( I was not aware there was different version of cable firmware available). I installed it to the HP laptop with XP window. It worked fine in most functions but crashed on “customization” (did not know why?). I bought another cable year later, it was Ver 2.4 firmware with Ver 13 software. With the help of the dealer thru TeamViewer, it installed to Win 10 and ran fine but crashed on “health check” function. I reinstalled with BGW’s provided Ver 12 software and everything worked as it should. I found out yesterday, Version 2.4 firmware did not connect with 2003 SC VIM but Ver 1.41 did.

So, thru my experience, I can conclude, cable firmware version is for the connectivity with vehicle VIM, version 1.41 will connect to newer SCs but version 2.4 will not connect to older SCs. The software version is for vehicle functionality, the newer vehicles will need newer version software. For the SC, version 10 and later is fine, but if you own other newer cars, you will need newer version.

Hope this help.

See. Ignorance is bliss. But not very helpful. I just learned that the mini vci P/N of J2534 is a communications/hardware interface standard SAE J2534. Not a P/N. 🤣 This kind of feces is what made me leave the computer industry many years ago. 🤮 I can pretty much go on any forum and see the same confusion.

I did find this in my research. But it's not really helpful.

SAE J2534 is a concept that enables flash programming of an emission related ECU regardless of the communication protocol that is used by the ECU.

Yea. That explains everytheverything. 🤣

Sir, you are a star. You are a star for even attempting to help sort this out. Thank You sincerely. I have the laptop on the way w XP SP3 loaded. I have a cable although I do not know what version it is any more. This time I will get it working so I can use it on a new/used Lexus I am hoping to buy. I'll shut up now.😉

You're obviously buying pirated software, what did you expect?

Paul,

Don’t shut up. Keep talking. Since the day you joined the club, you’re among with BGW and DD, offered the most valuable information to help others. I have learned so much. Thanks to you.

Back to TechStream. Lately, this software/firmware is becoming chaos out there. You don’t know who to trust, what is good. The cable firmware Ver is printed on the cable. The software, not the firmware, is the problem since it can imbedded with viruses and/or malwares .
