Default Antenna Mast Replacement

I just purchased a 2003 SC430. I need to replace the antenna. Are the aftermarket antenna's okay or should I buy OEM?

Welcome to the forum. Gman is correct there are several threads on this subject and even a TSB ... https://www.clublexus.com/forums/att...of-antenna.pdf

Speaking for myself, I prefer OEM parts but others have found aftermarket masts that work great. Hope the TSB above helps to get the repair done.

I just replaced the mast on my 02 SC430 just this morning. .A straight forward job. Found a youtube video comes in three parts. Guy is actually replacing mast on a 02 SC430. I bought a replacement mast off amazon and it worked perfectly.

Make sure you get the rubber gromment on the correct side of the retaining nut before you run the new cable into the motor.

Good luck.

And don't get fooled if your mast goes all the way up and then retracts one section. It is ONLY fully extended in AM. In FM, it extends completely and then retracts a section. Don't ask me how I know! LOL.

I don’t know about Paul’s up and down interactions with his mast, but the owner’s manual tells us the antenna mast deploys to various heights based on frequency ban tuned to.

change the frequency and watch the antenna move...the higher the frequency, the lower the antenna.

LOL. Well, you know how I was so happy a couple of months ago to find an antenna in the junkyard? 😁

The story starts before I found CL. I bought a mast replacement and found some instructions on another website that told me how to hyper extend the mast to remove it. But unfortunately (of course) the mast cable was broken inside the motor assembly. Back to the University of YouTube I go.

Found a video that showed everything you need to do to open the case of the antenna drive motor and remove the rest of the cable. All went pretty well...

Then I fed the new mast down and the motor didn't stop when the mast was fully retracted. It just kept running and grinding on and on for what seemed like forever.
So, I took it apart again.

Put it back together again. Fed the new mast down the mast tube again. Then it went all the way down and then back up halfway and stopped.
so I took it apart again. (See where this is going now dont you. 😉 )

So now Im just baffled as to what could be causing this? 🤔

And I decided that it might be a good idea to check out the motor. LMAO! IT WASN'T!

The motor and brushes are not held together as a single unit like I thought it would be. So, when I pulled on the motor, the brushes popped out. Doh!

Using a microscope, cussing and staring in amazement at Toyota Engineering, I put it back together. Plugged it back in, fed in the mast, it went up all the way and then retracted one section.
so I took it apart again...

Then a wire to one of the brushes broke. And I was so pissed at that point, I threw it in the trash. Not realizing how expensive it was going to be to replace.

If I would have only known about this site before I started. 😉 Happy Holidays to Everyone.

Are you saying as you adjust channels the antenna will go up or down?

Mine doesn't do that...same...regardless of station.

No. He just means AM to FM. Sitting inside the car enjoying the tuneage you wouldn't even notice it. Its a simple task to change the mast. Generally considered a two person job. One to control the radio and one to feed the mast. As long as the plastic zipper isnt broken. Then it turns into some work with some real "DO NOT DO THIS" warnings. LOL.

Can anyone be more exact on the socket size that is used for the antenna mast nut? There are several sizes of these nut sockets available so I want to get the right one.

I'm not feeling particularly warm and fuzzy about taking a screwdriver and trying to tap the nut - slipping off could cost me a LOT more in paint than the $25 socket, assuming I get the right size.
