Is there a "trusted" website that is best to download the software or just use the CD that I have? What version of the software should I download?
I would just use the software on the disc you have. People with newer cars need the newer software so their models/modules are included.
For your use, you are better going with the disc & cable combination you have. I say this because at some point they were tested and matched together as a functional product.
Once you get it working, you can always upgrade. But if you follow the K.I.S.S. method, you are better loading what you have first.
...my mechanic called me just a few days ago & said that he bought a Techstream loaded laptop with cable, from an ebay seller for $150. He's already used it on a few Lexus cars, that have come into the shop & thinks it's working perfect. I'm hoping to get the link of the seller tomorrow or Tuesday. If there are any available, I will post the link here. It's ironic that he stumbled onto it, because I contacted him a few weeks ago about changing a few settings on my Sc and the unit that he had/has wasn't able to do it.
So i took the plunge and bought the Techstream software (v10.10.018) and cable (J2534- No idea how to check firmware on it) and installed it on a Win7 32 bit system. Seems that everything installed correctly but I have no idea how to use this software. I launched the interface and it asks for a key. Did anyone else have this problem? If so, how do we bypass it, or will Techstream still work without the key? I haven't attempted to connect to my 2002 SC430 but thought I'd ask first before doing anything else. Hope someone can offer advice. Thanks.
Firmware rev. is downward compatible. There is utility to check f/w rev. after you install the software. There are newer software version than what you got.(V12.xx.xx)
I just checked my CD and it has folders for versions 7.10-7.11, 7.20 & 8.0. So I'm guessing that I might as well download the version 12 mentioned above.
After futzing with AVG, I was finally able to download MVCI but when I went to install it I got an error stating that the application failed to start because IT3Versatile.dll was not found. Any ideas?

sorry to hear that Harold!
did you download the newer software in post 48?
i do know that anti virus will find a Trojan in the software so you will need to disable the anti virus software to load TechStream.
mine runs on an old garbage XP laptop, no AV...that is all I do with the laptop.
it is a stand-alone and stays off the Internet
Yes, I was downloading the link from post 48. I suspect that part of the problem is my @#$%^& Vista machine along with a combination of the AVG virus program. I reinstalled the first part (TIS) after which it rebooted and my machine has been running slower than a Tandy TRS80 ever since. I just spent the last 30 minutes accomplishing nothing trying to make progress. I just rebooted and am hoping that will clear up what ever craziness is going on with it. Surprisingly enough, I couldn't even turn AVG back on.
However, the problem will still likely be there that it won't install MVCI because of the missing dll file. I did a search on explorer trying to find it and it couldn't find it anywhere on my machine, so either it was blocked or not downloaded.
While I still haven't gotten the software up and running (next step is to try the link otmike provided), I have made an adapter that I've mentioned in the past to prevent the Techstream from creating an error. I hooked up the 5 pins that Retroplay were needed (4,5,7,15,16) and plan to use it whenever I get the Techstream up and running. I will add a switch in it later (I couldn't find any appropriate around the house to use) to be able to kill the errors when they do show up (shorting 4 & 14).
