honestly, that is good news because I was confused as to why the cable would not communicate with your car.

If the vendor said you can update the firmware on the cable they are likely to be nothing more than liars. It is widely known that if you try to update the firmware on the cable you make it into a paper weight. I have never heard of someone successfully updating the firmware. If someone has other info I would like to hear it. I know it says you can in the screen that comes up with the details of the cable and you may be able to with a genuine cable. But these are not genuine for what we pay. I think the genuine cable the dealers use is over $500.00.

^^+1. Totally agree and would like to know if the firmware can be updated...always heard the same thing, if you try it will erase the existing cable firmware but won't load new firmware.

wish I had a 2006+ SC430 to test my two cables.

This may help with your installation...follow exactly!
they came from a poster on Amazon who says he is very techie.

This thing is a God send to anyone who doesn't like paying the dealer hundreds of dollars to program new keys, remotes, or replacement TPMS sensors, reset maintenance lights (after you've done the work yourself), etc.

First, It works fine with 64 bit (If you have an FTDI usb to serial cable you already have the drivers on your system and it is plug and play). It uses the very popular FTDI usb to Serial chip. Drivers are at[...] You want the D2XXX driver (as of this review [...]. Instead of installing the Mini VCI driver on the disk, run the installer you just downloaded.

But don't be quick to get rid of that MSI; you need it. If you don't have it, download 7-zip (it is open source unlike RARLabs) and install it. Once done, right click that MSI, select 7-zip --> Open archive (you didn't know an MSI is just a fancy zip file? :P) set that window to the side for now (minize or move or whatever) Now comes the fun part. You need to make a couple of folders so TIS is happy. open a command window as an administrator and copy paste this in the window:

md "C:\Program Files (x86)\XHorse Electronics"
md "C:\Program Files (x86)\XHorse Electronics\MVCI Driver for TOYOTA TIS"

Then copy FirmwareUpdateTool.exe,IT3System.ini, IT3UserCustom.ini and MVCI32.dll to C:\Program Files (x86)\XHorse Electronics\MVCI Driver for TOYOTA TIS

You will need to copy and paste this reg mod into a notepad and save it as minivci.reg and execute it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\PassThruSupport.04.04]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\PassThruSupport.04.04\XHorse - MVCI]
"Name"="XHorse - MVCI"
"Vendor"="XHorse ELECTRONICS Co.,Ltd."
"ConfigApplication"="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\XHorse Electronics\\MVCI Driver for TOYOTA TIS\\FirmwareUpdateTool.exe"
"FunctionLibrary"="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\XHorse Electronics\\MVCI Driver for TOYOTA TIS\\MVCI32.dll"
"APIVersion"="04.04"
"ProductVersion"="1.1.0"
"ProtocolsSupported"="J1850VPW:1, J1850PWM:1, CAN:1, ISO9141:1, ISO14230:1, ISO15765:1"
"J1850VPW"=dword:00000001
"J1850PWM"=dword:00000001
"ISO9141"=dword:00000001
"ISO14230"=dword:00000001
"CAN"=dword:00000001
"ISO15765"=dword:00000001
"SCI_A_ENGINE"=dword:00000000
"SCI_A_TRANS"=dword:00000000
"SCI_B_ENGINE"=dword:00000000
"SCI_B_TRANS"=dword:00000000

Make sure your device is disconnected and install the software (mine came with 10.10.018).

Now I know that TISkey.rar file is looking mighty tempting, but again this exe was made for x86 (32 bit). Extract TISKey.rar and then again use 7-zip open tiskey.exe (EXE's are archives too?! Say it isn't so...). Take the IT3System.ini file and copy it to C:\Program Files\Toyota Diagnostics\Techstream\Env\.

Huzzah! Bob's your uncle!

So one last note: THIS IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART. If you can't figure out the install with the directions above, You should NOT be doing most of what this software is capable of. You can easily brick you ECU (the thing that makes your engine vroom). If you are just looking to save money adding a key or remote, cool beans, but have someone techie help you out. At the end of the day this is an amazing value and an investment for anyone who owns a post 1996 Toyota. I'll be testing the adapter to see if it work with my Jag/Rover software next. I'll update with results.

You could always buy a used XP machine off ebay. That way you have a dedicated machine for Techstream

that looks like a perfect laptop for car maintenance!

i really like the little Gateway laptop I picked up for $40 from a friend at work. It's compact, light and has XP. It also has wireless if I need to look up something.
